Losing hope rapidly....

Posted by SadMum on December 28, 2004, at 7:07:45

Hi,

I live in the UK, and seem to have tried every ad without success. I've been depressed since the birth of my kids 10 years ago, and for the past 18 months have been under the care of a psychiatrist. Does anybody in the UK know of any effective combos (tried zispin and effexor)or have revisted drugs with success????

Have you tried MAOIs? They can be quite effective where other ADs have failed.

Have you explored other possible causes than the usual biological one? I got out of my supposedly chronic depression when I realised it was a PD and note a "chemical imbalance" ...

Thanks for the message - have had the usual tests for thyroid function, but that is all - are you in the US or the UK?

Thanks for the message - the answer is no - never been suggested by my psychiatrist.

Are you in the US? It's a bit harder to get treatment over here in the UK.

No I'm in the UK also. I've just started on Nardil which is an MAOI. They are controversial drugs, some doctors prescribe them, others dont, but most agree that they can be a very powerful alternative to conventional treatments. They react with a substance called tyramine in foods, which means that there is a diet that needs to be followed pretty strictly. It is this potential (sometimes very serious) reaction that discourages many doctors from prescribing them. But you never know, it could be something to bring up with your doctor, and see what he says. I know that MAOIs are the only drugs many people on this board respond to. There's plenty of info on them in the archives if you decide to do some investigating. :)

Just seconding jclint's MAOI suggestion.

Nardil/Parnate

These are, in my experience, powerhouse antidepressants. They pulled me up when nothing else worked. I would give them a try. You must follow a diet--I found that no problem. I had more side effects on Nardil--water retention, blood pressure drops. I have low blood pressure and that caused problems. If I were you, I would try one of these to pull you out of the depths. If you improve and maintain improvement for 6 month to a year, you are--I think--then a better candidate for meds with better side effect profiles.

Also consider Effexor. It has been a great anti-depressant for me, but I switched to it when my mood was stable on another AD.

Hang in.

Lia
