Can only get valium .... i want to feel normal without taking meds just a benzo when i need it and valium isnt doing nothign for me.. i want to try klon.. anyone?

Hi there,
I am also in the UK and have taken almost all of the available benzodiazepines including clonazepam. Although it is not licensed for anxiety my GP has never had any problem with prescribing it to me. It is also now suggested in the BNF for panic (in section 4.1.2), which you seem to have some symptoms of so maybe that would be the way to go with your doctor.

From another doctor but my gp said no i rang them today crying as i am really down and he said to just take my vitamins and he will do another referel to the physc ... and anyways u got pl posting negative things o nhere about drugs andit scares me and i am sure alot of others too... I just want a benzo for emergencys for now .. :-(

~~~I finally had to realize that part of my anxiety is being very effected by negative information about meds. This board and others like it, generally have a lot of postings that are about people having problems with their meds. I don't think that means ALL or close to all of the world on various head meds are not finding success and an improved quality of life because-- I know a number of folks who are doing great on just about every med I've seen posted.Also, my anxiety makes me hyperviligent and I "feel" and "experience" everything... it is part of my anxiety... this effects how I experience using meds. Recognizing this has been helpful for me.
I just want a benzo for emergencys for now .. :-(~~~A benzo used, for the most part, everyday gave me back my life. Treating "as needed" after I'm INTO a spiral of toxic anxiety does not work for me --- but, that's just me.
I wish you could either do well without meds (if that is really what you desire and think is best for you) or find a good med or combination that will work for you.

What dose of Valium do you take? I take 15mg when needed.

i have 2mg's i take 2-6mg a time but even them makes me anxious so maybe if i took more i might be even more anxious?

I've always needed an absolute minimum of 10mg to reduce anxiety. I wouldn't even be able to tell that I'd taken anything if I took 2-6mg.
Maybe you feel anxious after you take it because that's how you expect to feel due to previous bad experiences with the drug. You could ask for another benzo instead, it doesn't need to be clonazepam or alprazolam- there are plenty of others.Ed

I have found that taking 5mg 4-5 times a day is much better than taking 15-20mg once a day...the effects last longer

Thanks guys i will try taking 5mg when i need it and maybe even upto 10mg, juts hope my doctor will give me the 5mg tabs cus at the mo he only allows 2mg pack of 28 tabs every couple of mnths ..

> EdI have the same reaction...although theoratically valium can have a half life of 200hours, I found that its desired effect does not last more than 4-6 hours,and that a short potent benzo like lorazepam which is theoratically have a half life of 10-15 hours,has a much more robust sustained effect that lasts for 12 hours .

Yes, after a single dose, lorazepam lasts longer than diazepam, probably because lorazepam is less lipid soluble and less rapidly re-distributed. After repeated doses, diazepam lasts longer because of it's much longer half life. For me, a single oral dose of diazepam works within an hour and lasts about 90 mins followed by mild residual drowsiness and feelings of sadness. An isolated oral dose of lorazepam works within about 2 hours and lasts about 8 hours for me.

Six healthy volunteers received a single i.v. dose of 'low dose' lorazepam (0.0225 mg/kg), 'high dose' lorazepam (0.045 mg/kg) and placebo by 1-min infusion in a double-blind three-way crossover study. Plasma concentrations were measured 24 hr after dosage, and the EEG power spectrum was simultaneously computed by fast-Fourier transform to determine the percentage of total EEG amplitude occurring in the 13-30-Hz range. Low and high dose lorazepam did not differ significantly in distribution volume (1.89 versus 1.81 l/kg) or elimination half-life (11.5 versus 12.2 hr); clearance was slightly although significantly reduced at the higher dose (2.08 versus 1.88 ml/min/kg, P less than .005). EEG effects were of relatively slow onset, reaching their maximum change over baseline 30 min after infusion. The duration of action was prolonged, with the fraction of EEG activity in the 13-30-Hz range still significantly above baseline **8 hr** after the 0.045 mg/kg dose. Five of these subjects received 0.15 mg/kg of i.v. diazepam in a companion study of identical design. ***EEG effects of diazepam were shorter than those of lorazepam, probably because of the more rapid and extensive decline in plasma diazepam concentrations*** in the postinfusion distribution phase. In addition, the onset of diazepam's effect was immediate. In male CD-1 mice that received i.v. diazepam (8.3 mg/kg) or lorazepam (3.3 mg/kg), the brain:plasma concentration ratio was maximal 2.5 min after dosage for diazepam, but equilibration was delayed at least 30 min after dosage for lorazepam. Thus the slow onset of action of lorazepam is probably attributable to slow entry into brain.
