Lyrica (pregabalin) is now out, my review!

Posted by jlbl2l on October 7, 2004, at 15:29:06

It is so good for anxiety, social phobia, depression, and especially pain and sleep. All of my symptoms of social phobia, anxiety are gone, and its much different than benzo-type feeling, yet it works BETTER than xanax or klonopin. It is also great for pain all over the body, and it really lifts my mood incredibly - like an AD, but its a totally different class than SSRI's and common AD's.

This is the successor to neurontin and is defintely very cool. It is 1000X better than neurontin IMO and superior to xanax or klonopin or any SSRI etc.. for anxiety/depression/pain disorders.

Yay! Thanks for posting your experience with Pregabalin. I have a HUGE hunch it's the med for me, but unfortunately it's not out in Canada yet.
I'm so optimistic about it.....I hope it doesn't take too long to be released here.
How long did it take for you to feel any beneficial effects? Did you experience any side-effects? What dose did you start at?
Thanks in advance for answering so many questions.
Jas

It is basically like a highly tweaked neurontin, but slightly different. A little happier, and a little sleepier (at higher dosages at least).

It is far more powerful!

This is more of a benzo/neurontin "in one" feeling with an anti-depressant and anti-pain like effect. For me, (i have fibromyglia) it helps greatly with sleep and pain, and SP.

I started with 1 100mg pill which reminded me of neurontin i suppose, but it was much more consistent, and i fell asleep cause i was dizzy.(and got GREAT SLEEP!) ive gotten used to it and now its more stable.

the major side effect is basically same as neurontins : tiredness, dizzyness etc..

it kicks in within an hour, about the same as a klonopin..

Thanks for the good news! Glad it's working so well for you, please keep posting updates.
Where was it released, the US or the EU?
Is it being used for anxiety/depression?

Thanks,Eric

It is approved in the US. It has been for about a month. I imported it from the UK awhile ago, I live in the US.

It is being used for neuropathic pain associated with fibromyglia. I also have social phobia and sleep disorders, so it helps with those, as well as mild depression, which it helps.

It is approved in the USA and EU/UK. I live in the US and obtained it from the UK.

Thanks for the post. I also have social phobia. My question is, have you noticed that it causes a flat feeling (anhedonia or dysthymia) like klonopin does? Also, how would you rate it in comparison to klonopin and nardil?

Hello Michael!

What happened with the Picamilone?!! I thought it was working for you. I got some recently, I take a total of 150mg but it does nothing.

Clonazepam works woderfully. But never took it long term so can't say whether it has a depressant effect on me. I will start taking it daily soon and will take it along with Buspar, Reboxetine (NA reuptake inhibitor) and Selegiline. Maybe this will prevent the Clonazepam induced depression.

I might take it also in combo with Gabapentin in attempt to keep the Clonazepam dose low. Usually I need only 1 to 1.5 mg a day.

Pregabalin is approved here in Norway but still not in market, and it's a bit expensive.

Hope to hear from you.

Christine

Hi Christine,

Well, Picamilon did help quite a bit. However, you have to understand that when I had tried Picamilon I hadn't yet tried Klonopin and my only experiences with true meds was with SSRIs, selegiline and other meds that caused MORE anxiety. Therefore my SP was at very high levels. So when Picamilon kicked in, it seemed like a miracle drug at the time because it was really the first substance to give me some real anxiety relief.

With that said, I've since tried Nardil, Klonopin, Tianeptine, Amisulpride and a host of other meds for social phobia. So I now have a better persective on my experience with meds. Looking back, I'd say that Picamilon offered about 40% anxiety relief in the long run. There were some days when it COMPLETELY eliminated anxiety, but those days were short lived and the effects were very inconsistent. Without a doubt, Klonopin and Nardil are much more powerful drugs with more consistent effects.

One more thing - and I've mentioned this before, because I find it quite strange. For some reason, a combination of Picamilon + 1-2 alcoholic beverages or Picamilon + Tianeptine + small dose Klonopin (my current combo) can have extremely prosocial effects on me. NO other meds have this effect on me. Not adderall, not codeine, not nardil. None. Don't know why this happens, but there it is.

Oh, and a final thought: If social phobia is your primary dx, beware selegiline, especially as monotherapy. It made me paranoid and even less social. It is NOT a good drug for social phobia on its own.

Good luck.

I had the exact same reaction to Selegiline for my Social Phobia. Did you get stiffness in the back of the neck from it too?

Where are you getting your prescription filled? I can't find any info about pregabalin being approved in the US-not even on the Pfizer site. I don't know how I coud have missed this one because it's been on my radar for some time.

You have the same dx as myself and like others, have had pregabalin on the radar. Can you describe in what way it helped your social anxiety (in prosocial ways and/or fear of social interaction, rejection, disagreement).

Not approved for anxiety, what about insurance?

Only problem is that it is not approved for anxiety, so your doc has to give you a pain or other related diagnosis or insurance won't cover it.

Here's a few quotes from various sources:

Pregabalin: a new anxiolytic
by
Lauria-Horner BA, Pohl RB.
Department of Psychiatry,
Dalhousie University,
Halifax, NS, Canada.

"In preclinical trials of anticonvulsant activity, pregabalin is three to ten times more potent than gabapentin." ... "In Phase II and III trials, pregabalin shows promising anxiolytic action when compared to placebo in generalised anxiety disorder, social phobia and panic disorder."

***

It's kind of been an up and down history for Lyrica... in 2001 Pfizer stopped clinical trials in humans because concurrent trials with mice showed a far increased occurence of tumors. Don't know if they somehow resolved this problem, or just brushed it aside. I know the EU approved it for GAD, but I believe it is still under review by the FDA; however is available for treatment of chronic pain.

Good luck, keep us posted!

Matt
