My startup experience on Nardil

Posted by maddog on September 26, 2004, at 19:07:23

Hi Everyone,

I promised several weeks ago to post an update on my progress with Nardil. Here is a summary.

Condition: I suffer from anxiety and from low social phobia. Occassionally the anxiety has lead to bouts of depression.

Drugs: I have taken Paxil and Klonopin in the past. Paxil was mildly helpful but not a solution. I started Nardil 7 weeks ago. 45 mgs for 10 days, 60 mgs for 4 weeks and 75 mgs for 2 weeks.

Side Effects: Insomnia (most intense for a week after dose increase), low libido, occassional hypotension, increased appetite, brain fog for a few days after dose increase. I have a high tolerance for side effects so these have not bothered me too much. My diet has changed only a bit.

Effects: I am calmer, my mood has stabilized, I am happier and I certainly feel less overall anxiety. In terms of social anxiety I would say there has been some benefit but it is not 100% yet (I would not expect it to be this soon anyway). So far, I am happy with the effects of Nardil and I assume that 4-8 weeks at 75mg (or higher) will bring increased benefits.

Note that I also take a low dose of Klonopin as needed for temporary relief in anxiety provoking situations (giving presentations, important meetings, etc.)

If anyone has any questions, I am happy to elaborate. I hope this helps some of you who are considering Nardil.

Hi Maddog:

I am looking for a drug which will help me with Social Anxiety, Generalized Anxiety and bouts of rage from lack of patience. Do you think Nardil would help?

I was not able to tolerate the side affetcs of Zoloft at a low dose of 25 mgs. Most notable, lack of sleep at night and feeling tired during the day. Since I am in sales, this is Not Good.

Please give me your impressions. Thanks!

Hope you don't mind me interjecting my opinion also, but I've been on Nardil and think it would do very well as far as the therapeutic effects you are looking for, but there is a good chance it will also give you insomnia, as well as sleepiness in the afternoon. I found that sleep aids reduced the insomnia and the afternoon sleepiness. I would also get insomnia myself on Zoloft on as little as 25 mg/day. If I had to do it over again, I definitely would have used some kind of sleep aid to help me out, but I had a somewhat of an irrational hangup about using them back then. Hence, I always tended to limit the dose of whatever I was on to what I could tolerate from an insomnia standpoint, which limited the therapeutic effects of the drug, plus I would still suffer from insomnia a fair amount of the time, anyway. Some of the sedating antidepressants such as trazodone make good matches for countering the side effects of the SSRIs, as they blockade the serotonin 2A receptor that is stimulated by SSRIs and causes insomnia in some people. Trazodone can also be used with MAOIs, or just as a general sleeping aid.

Hi T-Time,

Nardil definitely helps with general and social anxiety. I personally have no experience with rage, hwoever, Nardil has had a calming effect upon me. I am less affected by the comments and actions of others. Hence, it might help with your rage.

In terms of insomnia and sleepiness. Yes, Nardil will cause these, especially when dose is increased. I don't know about long term. However, my pdoc says that the time of day when the medication is taken is important. I also use benadryl to help me stay asleep at night. I usually get at least 6 hours of sleep, if not more. I think that's quite good.

Let us know if you decide to try Nardil. Good luck.
