Stopping and restarting dose

Posted by Squiggles on August 14, 2004, at 8:55:58

I find that in the case of lithium
(maybe other drugs are different)
i sometimes feel the symptoms of toxicity;
I then skip a cap for a day to bring
the blood/brain level down. Unfortunately,
the next day, i often get headache or
vertigo in the back of the head where i
once had the head injury incident (stroke
or seizure or lithium o.d. - don't know).

I'm sort of stuck between a rock and a hard
place because i would like to lower the
lithium dose but only slightly by cutting
a cap every two weeks or so. Is this a bad
idea?

Especially in your case, with that head injury, this really is a question for your doctor. Have you brought this up with your doctor? If so, what does he/she say?

Personally, it doesn't sound like a good idea to me. I'd suggest that lowering the dosage by reducing the daily dose would be preferable to lowering the dosage by skipping a day or two a month. That's only one opinion, from a non-professional, so give it the weight it deserves.

Again, I do hope that you'll consult your doctor about this. Best luck.

Thank you very much for your quick
response; i will do that -- i have
already asked on numerous occasions
to have my dose lowered but my dr.
does not want to lower it. Perhaps
he knows something i don't.:-)

hi mike,

- confusion
- lack of concentration
- fogginess
- headache, esp. on top and back centre where
the axe incident happened (seizure/stroke)
- headache earthquake feelings
- won't mention diarrhea because i have had
it for 3-4 yrs almost every time;
- vertigo
- feeling of danger

My dr. tried to ease my fears of toxicity
by pointing out that my bloods are always
in the therapeutic range (1x yr. test for
23 years now); But i worry that there may
be cumulative toxicity over the years.
It seems worse since the seizure/stroke
incident - at least it seems to hit the
same areas of the head.

I may just not know what is going on.

FYI:

I feel better this morning; interrupted
sleep, and a bit of a headache but no
severe vertigo; much more like a hangover.

Could be the clonazepam interaction?

I am back to my regular dose and will
try to resist temptation interrupting
it. I think that my ingnorance inclines
me to mistrust my doctor's orders about
lithium toxicity. Anyone else, have
problems with non-compliance?
