Low dose Zyprexa and weight gain?

Posted by sedona on August 8, 2004, at 1:20:14

I started taking 2.5 mg of Zyprexa two days ago and feel good(lack of irritability and anxiety). However, I gained weight when I tried Prozac and Lexapro and do not want to gain more. I am wondering if a small dose of Zyprexa like 2.5 mg or even 5 mg would be low enough to avoid the weight gain that it so notorious for? I know everyone reacts to medications in different ways, but any input would be much appreciated.

Thank you

very very likely. Zyprexa messes with your blood sugar from what I understand so do expect to gain weight.

If it messes with my blood sugar could I try a low sugar diet? Also, may I ask where you found the info about blood sugar, because I have been looking at books and websites and they all mention is weight gain and increased appetite, but give no "real" explanation for this problem.

Thanks for your response

From what I have seen, the weight gain on Zyprexa does not appear to be dosage dependant. You will probably gain (or not gain) the same amount of weight whether you are taking 2.5mg or 20mg. I think 5.0mg is ideal for non-psychotic situations.

Hi:
In my personal experience on Zyprexa, 2.5 mg. in the beginning(for one year) and the 5 mg. afterwards(about 2.5 years), ... I'm quite happy about this AP with a terrific result.

In my case, the Zyprexa has worked for 'rapid cycler,' 'dysphoric manic/aggression(rageous form of manic) and all other Bp symptoms. It's an 'ALL-Purpose' AP for me. Further, the Zyprexa boosts 'AD/anti-depressant' and mood-stabilizer effect.

However, I started to gain 'weight' just recently after those past years without worrying about gaining any weight. Then, I attributed to the Zyprexa 5 mg. Or, I may get just to the 'age.' Truthfully, I have no clue to say which one ...., just my age or the Zyprexa.

Either way, I try to ask my pdoc. 'Geodon' that is VERY similar to the Zyprexa except good-night sleep problem. For that, I'm pretty certain one of my AD combo. 'Trazodone' will take care of.
H.G.

It should be written in the monograph that is in the box. The FDA made all manufactures of atypical antipsychotics warn about hyperglycemia & diabetes. The realease of the first AP Thorazine caused a jump in the amount of people who are diabetics too.

Increased appatite was dependant on dose for me. I find that the zyprexa made foods taste better and I would feel more hungery, even if I wasn't, especialy within the first 2-3 hours of my dose.

I am taking a low dose of Zyprexa, and I've gained a few pounds, but I'm not certain it's due to the drug. The Z really helps keep my anxiety under control, so the weight gain is a small price to pay. I'd feel differently if I gained more than 10 lb, though.

I was on 2.5mgs for about 6 weeks and gained 30lbs (nm)

My son was on 20mg for 1 year (schiz). We asked the Dr. to reduce dosage to see if weight problem improved. He went from 20 to 15 to 10 and then to 7.5 mg. He was already losing weight at 7.5 mg. Unfortunately after a few days his Psychosis began to appear again. He is back on 15 mg now and OK. At least we knocked off 5 mg. He is back to eating frequently though. I think 10 mg may be possible or at least 12.5 mg. Heads up to those who are sensitive, Zyprexa can cause difficulty swallowing also.

Have you tried Abilify & Geodon? You could possibly use less Zyprexa combined with a little of the others.
