Well someone's got to know.

Matt

My vote is Effexor (nm)

Well, I can only talk about those I tried so between : trazodone, seroquel, zyprexa, celexa and effexor xr ...

I'd say Effexor xr ... but I have yet to knwo what the celexa withdrawal feels like.

Out of the 10+ meds I've tried, Effexor is the only one I've suffered withdrawal symptoms on. I am about to withdraw from Nardil and will have to see about that one, though.

I'm not absolutely certain, but after several years of reading hundreds of posts here and elsewhere, as well as reading many journal articles, I would say that Effexor and Paxil are probably the worst. I believe this means they are addictive, much more addictive than most of the benzodiazapines and stimulants we discuss here.

Interesting to hear Effexor and/or paxil. Both Effexor and Paxil I was able to quit cold turkey with no with drawl.

I have tried to cold turky with Lamictal and slip imediately into depression after 2 days. I am now goung to reduce 100 mg every 2 weeks until my 400 mg is finished.

My vote Lamictal.

"I would say that Effexor and Paxil are probably the worst. I believe this means they are addictive, much more addictive than most of the benzodiazapines and stimulants"

*********************

Is Paxil dependence a larger concern for clinicians than dependence on Dexedrine? I believe the addictive potential is greater for the benzodiazapines and especially the stimulants. Stimulants have desirable and undesirable properties that make them addictive.

The stimulants have a rapid onset of action that produce an immediate change in consciousness or perception. Also, the substances feed the reward systems in the brain by *primarily* acting on dopaminergic systems. Paxil and Effexor don't exert an effect on dopamine.

The symptoms of psychological withdrawal following substance use account for the undesirable properties that make them addictive. Avoid the lows, maintain the highs. Stimulants are classified as a Schedule II Controlled Substance. They are closely regulated by the government and DEA. Anyway, that's my two cents. I wonder how chemist or someone else would respond?

I guess it depends on personnal experience, I mean most of us haven't tried "most" of ADs out there ... I've never taken Lamictal .. but it sounds pretty nasty.

From my personal experience, EFFEXOR! I have never had such a withdrawal from any medication that I can remember. I was on 300 mg/day, then went to 150 mg for a day and quit. My pdoc told me to do two days at 150 mg, but what would it matter???? I quit taking it due to the electrical shock feeling I was getting. Thought it was from Wellbutrin, which I was taking with Effexor, but the shocks continued. Called my MD to get a second opinion and they think I was having an allergic reaction to Effexor. Since last Thursday, I have been extremely sick, flu symptoms, still having electrical zings, but not as intense. Today is the first day I have not vomited. I have been extremley tired, wicked dreams. I will be glad when it's all over and I am back to my "normal" self, or whatever that is!

I am not a chemist, but would agree Effexor is the worse considering I am going through withdrawal right now and it is awful! Never had a reaction like this before!

At one point or another in my life I have gone off:

Welbutrin
Prozac
Serzone
Celexa
Effexor
Depakote

Effexor was by far the harshest! I had to taper very, very slowly. I got down to chipping off bits of the tablet to stave off feelings of nausea and those electric brain shock feelings!

I just recently tapered off Serzone and I was so surprised that it was so difficult. It took a month and a half of slowly tapering. The usual symptoms: nausea, dizziness, electric "shock" type feelings, light-headedness, headaches....YUK

Withdrawl from Nembutal addiction would be tough. It also can be lethal due to rebound seizures, etc. Xanax withdrawl can have the same sort of problems, but not as lethal. Paxil & Effexor might cause a lot of pain, especially if you go cold turkey, but there is no chance that it's going to kill you like Barb or Benzo withdrawl.

Cheers,
Panda.

Effexor w/d was excrutiating, I have to agree... VERY unpleasant.

Badmood,

Thanks for the discription of the electrical shock.

This may sound sort of ignorant but I have been unable to describe that feeling for 3 years.

I always describe it as a "buzzing feeling" in which I know none of my doctors ever understood it.

The electrical shock is exactly what certain meds feels like to me and now I can describe it!

Hats off to you my friend!

Methadone hands down
stays in your system like 24-72 hours at a time and your body gets addicted and dependant very fast. the withdrawl i had from methadone was worse then heroin.
