WEIGHT GAIN AND THESE MEDS!!

Posted by shadows721 on July 10, 2004, at 22:56:15

I gained 7 pounds. I even started working out - walking 4 miles every other day, pilates, 35 min of aerobic workout with one pound wts. STILL, I keep gaining weight. I even started restricting the amount of what I eat. I starting replacing meals with high protein low carb shakes. I want to stay in my current size clothes. I CAN'T afford a new wardrobe. STILL, I feel like I am busting out of my clothes. It seems the muscle just replaced the room of the fat and I am even bigger. I am bigger than I have EVER been in my entire life.

My doc thinks it's the Seroquel 25 mg and the lexapro. I have halved the Seroquel now. I am thinking about doing the same with the Lexapro. Folks, I feel like a potatoe literally in my clothes. I am on 15 mg of topamax and it helps my back pain. This wt gain is coming on with a vengency. People are commenting on it. Oh, Shadows, you must be eating more, etc. NO! NO! NO!!! I am on the strictest diet I have ever been on in my life. I don't know how much more of this I can take. I am only 5'-2-1/2", so every pound shows. Darn, I am sick of this!

Have you had your thyroid & sugar checked recently? Diabetes is worth keeping an eye on since Seroquel can cause it.

My personal opinion is that high protien/low carb isn't the best way to go regardless of how many fad diets are based on it.

Cheers,
Panda.

I agree, definitely have the thyroid and blood sugar levels checked. If they're normal and the weight gain is still a problem, I'd tell my doctor I want new meds. People may call me shallow for that, but body image can be a big part of self esteem, and lower self esteem is the last thing a depressed person needs. Do try to stay healthy while you're working out the meds problem though. Meaning don't starve yourself or overdue the exercise...you don't want to fall into some type of eating disorder, trust me.

(Good gracious, sometimes I wonder if there's a psych disorder I HAVEN'T had yet!)

In my experience though, most doctors are fairly sympathetic to the weight gain concerns. I had one say to me when I asked about Remeron "Oh, I would LOVE to put you on that because I think it would work great for you, but you'd look up the weight gain data and refuse to take it." She was right too.

But anyway, the thyroid and blood sugar levels should definitely be checked out. I sympathize with the frustrating weight gain issue and I wish you the best of luck in getting things worked out.

Even though you are probably too young for the menopause one of the best explanations of weight gain that comes even with dieting and exercise is in a book called "Getting throught the Menopause Without Weight Gain".

The title I've written may not be absolutely correct, I can check if you're interested. But the explanation of how fat cells can be activated and fill up even when eating tons of salad is truly interesting.

And coz these psychotropics have given me hell and done exactly what you describe, driving me even more mad (Lol) I was so helped by her positive approach, plus the scientific and very plausible explanations of metabolic/muscular/hormonal reasons.

Meds SEs may simulate some of the same bodily conditions as menopause, something quite similar, affecting our hormones/muscles/metabolism. I know my hormones have been affected by my meds and so has my weight. I gained and don't lose easily despite rigorous exercise and careful dieting.

No more diets. Lots of exercise.

And lots of small meals a day, no ordinary meals, coz that stretches stomach and activates fat cells. That's a nutshell description, better to see the book.

You aren't alone in this quagmire. And I certainly BELIEVE you when you say you are dieting and exercising more than ever and still gaining. It's a cruel business but it does indeed happen. Ignorant people need to be ignored or put int their place gently and surely. One of my favorite returns is, "I didn't know you cared so much for me that you keep track of my weight. Do you also keep track of my bowel movements?"

If that's too crass for you, try something you can say that is a little funny and also says, back off. Or if funny isn't your style, how about, "Sorry, I'm not in the mood to talk about my weight. If you want to set up a time we can talk about yours?" Or just "Look, I'm very busy right now. Is there anything else?" Hope you get support for this.

I LOVE THESE COMEBACKS! I will definitely use these. I have also gained 25 lbs on Effexor and am trying to slow the gain by diet and exercise, but every week the scale goes up. It is mind boggling!
