No worries mate! Better to have too much work than not enough as an idle mind is not a good thing. :)

Cheers,
Panda.

Working!! Egads - what are you thinking? Life beyond Babble?

Glad to see you, chemist.

Don't you know............?

Work is the curse of the drinking classes?

('Course, quoting that reminds me of Dorothy Parker's little ditty:

If, with the literate, I am
Impelled to try an epigram,
I never seek to take the credit.
We all assume that Oscar said it.

Ah, Oscar...)

It's good to see you back, and to make sure this fits on the Meds board, can you answer a question about meds for me?

Here's what I think I've gathered regarding drugs that affect the norepinephrine systems: they do tend to cause the most weight gain, and that's a function of their effect on norepinephrine. Unfortunately, they're also the drugs that tend to do best for me, with a little bit of dopamine action a real boon for augmenting that response. Kinda puts me into a real bind, since the weight gain is a big part of the reason that I keep stopping the meds after a couple of years, leading to another major depressive episode. That's the background.

What can you suggest regarding a drug that hits NE pretty strongly, gives DA a kick on the shins as it goes by, and has the most benign side effect profile regarding those nasties like weight gain, constipation, sedation?

And here's the kicker question. Get this right and I'll give you a lollipop (or a Guiness Extra Stout next time you're in CA).

Are there any biochemical mechanisms to reduce the weight gain/constipation/etc WITHOUT reducing the effectiveness of the anti-depressant resonse?

(There, now this is a med related thread. What a relief!)

ni racer, thanks for the kind words....i know the other posters know more about this stuff than i do, and my response is gleaned from my cursory literature/refs, but: effexor. strong S/NE RI, weak on the dopamine. likely to cause weight loss. give a shout to panda, ace, jbl121, SLS, or vultan: they're way more up on this than i am. the other one you might consider is wellbutrin, but from what understand, doesn't pack the S/NE punch that effexor does. now, about your bonus question: i'd like to say leptin, but see Science 304 (5667):108-110 (2004). if you want the PDF (or anyone else), let me know. all the best in your quest, chemist
