I have the myoclonic jerk blues

Posted by gardenergirl on June 8, 2004, at 22:27:47

Since I decreased my Nardil from 60 mg back to 45 mg due to edema and urinary retention, I have noticed that myoclonic jerks have increased! What's up with that? I actually timed them one night when I was trying to get to sleep. At one point, it was every 5-10 seconds. At times, my abs clench, too, and/or my jaw snaps shut. Has anyone else had this experience? My poor husband...

And why with a dose decrease?

Someone once called me a myoclonic jerk.

It is sometimes difficult to figure out why these drugs do what they do. I know that the increase in MCJs with the decreased dosage seems counterintuitive, but the excitability of nerves is determined by a complex array of interactions and feedback compensation mechanisms. Hopefully, things will settle down within a week or two.

How long has it been since you reduced the dosage?

It's only been about four days. I've also been a bit sleep deprived since working on my diss. You know how sometimes you are too wired to sleep? I wonder if that is also contributing.

Hi GG,

I am not on your med, but I have those darn things too. It scares the heck out of my hubby. He is like, "What the heck just happened to you?" It scares me for that matter. I have a lot of anxiety, so I was guessing it was my body just bolting from a change into relaxation.

Has your anxiety increased with the decrease of your med? I was wondering if that has anything to do with it.

I haven't noticed any increase in anxiety, but I did take a mental health day yesterday from my dissertation. I tend to do that when I am more depressed. But it's hard to say, because I had just put in a very intense effort recently. Plus with some other stuff going on (car wreck and upcoming surgery for my Mom), there is definitely an increase in stress. Maybe not best time to decrease! :)

Thanks, sorry you have to deal with them too. I have them so much, the repertoire of dreams that accompanies them (usually just falling or tripping on something) has expanded to include all kinds of movements.)

I wish I knew what caused them.

Take care,
gg
