Wellbutrin--AGITATION and ANGRY...PLEASE HELP!

Posted by yoyoma on June 2, 2004, at 21:01:17

I am on my second week of wellbutrin immediate release tablets(100 mg in the morning, 100 mg six hours later) and i find that I am feeling all this pent up anger inside of me that I cant release!! I feel like i want to just start throwing things around to get it out of me. On top of that I am getting bloated and gaining weight. Has anyone had this experience? The first week i felt great and was motivated to excercise and talk with ppl. Now I am quiet and irritated...for no reason! please help me!

I tried out Wellbutrin for over six weeks and the agitation simply never went away. It wasn't as severe as what you're describing, though. Is there as a specific reason you're on the immediate release tablets? If so, it seems to make more sense to start with the 75mg tablet once, then twice, then three, then four times per day if you're taking it every 6 hours. I'd talk to your doctor ASAP about this; if the rage is this uncomfortable, I'd cut back to the 100mg once per day.

I hope you feel better soon.

I am hoping that the agitation and anger will go away with time once my body gets adjusted...all these meds (the ones i took before wellbutrin) seem to be doing more harm than good...what is the point of all of this? it seems like i will never find one that i am satisfied with and neither will anybody else on this website it seems like. Might as well just take nothing and forget all these meds.

I developed an extreme irritability problem on Wellbutrin after being on 2 x 150 mg/day of the SR version for a few months. I felt like a pressure cooker wanting to explode, and even running three miles did not seem to blow off much steam. Ultimately, I had to dump the med because of this. It's not a problem I ever had with any of the ten other meds I've tried.

I had to try many different meds and combinations to get to the right "cocktail" for me. Getting the medications, dosages, and timing is an art rather than a science, in part because of our highly lauded uniqueness. You can't just take a diagnosis and say, "take this, it works for that condition". In my case once I found the right medication, it took months (yes, months) before I felt the full benefits.

Please don't despair - and try to work closely with your doctor to monitor how you're doing.

Take good care,
pc

It is possible to find the right medication or combination, with the help of a good psychiatrist. I'm doing pretty well now, but had a terrible time with Wellbutrin -- severe anxiety/agitation (and other really weird side effects) that didn't diminish even after two months of use. My GP prescribed it, but when I went to a psychiatrist he told me that he almost never prescribes WB for patients with anxiety because it's notorious for making this worse.

I'm doing much better on a combination of Klonopin, Lamictal, and Adderall (the latter for ADD). I also take Xanax occasionally, just when I need it. The nice thing is that I have no side effects. But it did take a while (and some unpleasant drug reactions) to find the right mix, which will be different for nearly everyone.

My point is that with all the medications out there, you can get relief; it may just take a while, and a good doctor. If your doctor isn't treating you effectively, then look for a new one if you possibly can. And don't give up on medications because of some bad experiences -- they can really help once you find what's best for you.

Good luck!

I've been on Wb for 10 or so years. I still feel that way sometimes, usually when the Immediate Release peaks in my body. Find something to do with that, go beat rugs, play a violent video game, listen to dark angry music, just try to bear with it till it slacks off some.
For me it's also hormonal, I had horrible fits of rage when I was on birth control. (just a thought)

It will probably get better, the questions are if you can handle that bad period at the beginning, and if "better" is good enuf for you to deal with the rest of the side-effects. *shrug*

As they say on the 'net, Your Mileage May Vary.

It could, and if nothing else you'll get better sleep than you would without. :)

i tried to take wellbutrin a few months ago and started with 150 SR and it was way too much for me. I'm now taking only 75 a day, and I'm tolerating it much better. So maybe try a smaller dose and go from there. Hope you are well.
