Lexapro-Feeling tired and drowsy.

Posted by BTR on May 21, 2004, at 10:23:03

I have been on 10 mg's. of Lex for the past 3 weeks. I feel fatigued throughout the day and a little out of it mentally. My pdoc just had me increase my dosage to 15 mg's. daily yesterday. I was taking the Lex in the morning but have started taking it in the evening, made that change about 3 days ago.
I have been diagnosed with Major Depression and Anxiety Disorder. I also take about 1 mg. of Klonopin daily. FYI-I was on Celexa for about a year and felt great but it just stopped working. Any suggestions or help from anyone who has experienced these SE's would be appreciated. Thanks!

The first 2-4 weeks on Lexapro can be hell. If feeling tired is your only side effect, you are one of the lucky ones! The good news is that, in the majority of patiens, including myself, the SE will eventually disappear. A major improvement should be noticed by the fourth week. I also hope that once the Lex "kicks in" you will no longer require your dose of Klonopin.
Good luck, let us know how you are doing.

Thanks for your insight. I know it's only been 3 weeks but it's nice to hear from someone who has been through it. I hope to be doing a lot better within the next couple of weeks. This is a great site!

I've been on Lexapro for 23 days now, things have been very hard for me over the last two weeks. I've been on Effexor and Zispin (Remeron) before but never ssri's and into my fourth week I'm having doubts if it's worth it, this board is the only thing keeping me from throwing away the bloody tablets and suffer the depression.
I can't stop streching, I feel wired, my back, neck and chest have a sore/pain for some of the day, and I'm very irritable, diarrhea, mild headache, fatigue. But as a drug abuser in the past I can take it, I think!!!!
The only thing that keeps me going is the 6 to 18mg of bromazepam I take each day and sleeping pills.
I can't wait for the light at the end of the tunnel, I hope to God you find it too my friend. I'll keep you posted when/if things get better. As the experienced users say; stick with it, a few weeks of shit will open up to a blue sky..
Take care..

I experienced that tired drowsy feeling when I started taxing Lexapro so I started taking it in the evening. After a couple of weeks, I switched back to taking it in the morning and have had no problems since. I think it is just part of the initial part of getting used to the drug. You might want to try that and then switch back to taking it in the morning and see how that does.

Good luck!

For those that have experience with Lexapro how long did it take for you to feel like yourself again? Everyday I wake up and hope to feel a little better but nothing has really changed. I was on Effexor for a while and that shot my anxiety through the roof. Thanks to all who have given their input.

Hi BTR,
It took me about 8 to 9 weeks before the tiredness went away. My 5th. week I was ready to throw the towel in but reading all the posts on lex this was normal so I stuck it out. I am doing great on it now. I have been on lex 4 months & feel great. Also on remeron & klonopin but at very low dosages. Hope this helps you. Stick with the lex for at least 3 months. I know it's rough but well worth it.
Zena

9 weeks for me. Don't expect something BIG to happen...it just kind of hits you one day that you feel GOOD! It snuck up on me!~~~8|8

"Individual results may vary" but in my case, it took about 7 weeks to realize that I was feeling pretty good. As I mentioned before, the first 2-3 weeks were hell, but little by little those nasty SE went away. I take 10mg in the morning. I still have mild anxiety in the mornings, which I have been able to cope without Xanax. Just as it is supposed to be in life, some days are better than others.
