Serzone/nefazodone still available outside U.S.?

Posted by Rick on April 22, 2004, at 0:37:17

This is just a curiosity thing. I used Serzone several years ago, and have a friend who still uses it and finds it very helpful.

I've read about it being pulled from the market in Canada, Australia, and several European countries...sometimes by governmental intervention due to the rare but serious adverse liver effects, and other times purportedly due to low sales.

I'd be interested in hearing where else in the world Serzone, or other branded or generic nefazodone, remain available.

Thanks,
Rick

You can still get it here in Australia, but I thought that it was a maufacturers decision to stop making it?

Cheers,
Panda.

I guess it truly must have been a manufacturer's decision there if you can still get it as a generic (or whatever the term for a non-branded med is in Australia). I know Bristol-Myers-Squibb has cited low-sales for the pull-out of the brand in some countries (including Australia), but I wonder if this decision might have factored in the chances of eventual forced discontinuation.

Panda, I have a follow-up to my reply already. I did a quick search, and see that maybe you *were* talking about the brand. The article below says that the plug won't be pulled until May, and implies that nefazodone will be completely unavailable to Aussies after that. It talks about whether the pullout will create problems for some people. Funny, in the U.S. generic drug manufacturers rushed to start making nefazodone as soon as BMS's patent expired. I wonder why the same doesn't happen in Australia if the pullout is not government-mandated?

Hi Rick:

--- In my guess, here, in USA many of those who have been on Serzone asking/demanding both FDA and its maker, BMS *not* to discontinue Serzone, along with their pdocs.'s backup.
*Good* support must be one of factors, .... At least, for me, Serzone is 'life-saver,' and then wrote to both FDA and BMS about how effective AD Serzone is.'

Great to hear Serzone helps you so much, HappyGirl! That's why Googling up Serzone and seeing a zillion ambulance-chaser ads makes me furious. What pathetic leeches! Yeah, like they are really sooooo concerned with the public's well-being instead of its wallets...

My heart truly goes out to the rare users who suffered severe liver damage, but for every life taken by Serzone I'm sure there have been many thousands it has *saved* by lifting depression and reducing the risk of suicide.

We are only 20 million people, about the size of New York state I think population wise, so I doubt that a generic manufacturer would bother with us.

Cheers,
Panda.
