Hi, i've just registered after reading various messages which i've found really useful. I've been on effexor for about 2mths no and put on about 18lbs Has anyone else experienced such weight gain. I'm finding this very hard to cope with as i've always been slim. Also, what is troubling me most is the binge eating. Has anyone found that effexor has caused/increased binge eating??

I have also gained a lot of weight since starting with Effexor, and have started binge eating and drinking much more than I ever have in my life. I feel less suicidal and more contained, but still very tense and stressed.

I too gained weight on effexor: about 12 lbs in 3 months. I had to reduce the dose to 75mg/day due to high blood pressure, and we started on Wellbutrin. I must admit I was relieved not to have the food and drink cravings. Wellbutrin makes me pretty jumpy right now, but I enjoy not thinking about food all the time! Also the weight is *magically* disappearing. Maybe a lot of it was water??
My doctor told me that Wellbutrin is an alternative to effexor - you might ask about it. I felt that the weight gain was contributing to my already depressed state.

I have not gained any weight on Effexor, I've actually lost about 7 pounds so far and that's not all that great since now I'm 95 lbs. soaking wet. It has greatly decreased my appetite. But I have noticed, like you, that I am drinking a lot since I've started (4 weeks ago). I don't know if this is due to the fact that I'm feeling better and going out more to bars, thus drinking more, or if it is actually the quantity that I'm drinking at each sitting. I think that it might be both. I only like to drink when I'm happy, and since I have been feeling better I guess that makes sense. But it kinda alarms me -- I don't like being hungover and since I have lost weight since starting effexor, I don't feel very healthy physically. Has anyone else increased their alcohol consumption since starting ADs?

I am a binge eater and effexor did not help. at a higher does it got a little better though, controlling my appetite somewhat. after seeing an eating disorder psych,
i have switched to wellbutrin.
