Social anxiety/phobia is early psychosis?

Posted by rianny on April 1, 2004, at 15:37:36

Hi.

Treatment with my previous psychitrist failed to overcome my social phobia symptoms. So, I asked my family doctor to get a referral to a new psychitrist near town. I finally got a message from one, and it says it is early psychosis program. However, doesn't psychosis mean hearing voices, hullucinations, and so on? I'm kind of freaked out when it said early psychosis program.

Does anyone know about this or have an experience with it if you've had anxiety problem?

Hi Rianny,

I have an anxiety disorder and have never heard anyone refer to it as a psychosis. So, I was curious and looked it up online.

From Dictionary.com: Psychosis - any severe mental disorder in which contact with reality is lost or highly distorted.

In that context I can see how social anxiety, or any kind of anxiety disorder, can be seen as a mild psychosis. With anxiety people get overly anxious or frightened by things that aren't actually threatening. That could be looked at as a slightly distorted perception of reality.

If you're comfortable with it, I recommend calling the psychiatrist who told you about the program. Just ask him to describe the psychosis program and ask if he thinks it could help someone overcome social anxiety.

If you don't like the idea of a psychosis program there are other psychiatrists out there who can help you. It's just a matter of finding the right one.

Also, I'm curious if you've tried any medication for your social anxiety. I've heard that Paxil and Klonopin are both good at treating it. I wish you all the luck in the world in finding a solution for your social anxiety.

K.

My last psychitrist prescribed Paxil and Celexa, and the result was not effective. I'm taking Klonopin about 0.5mg per day. I know it has to be over 1.0mg per day to overcome social anxiety but it kind of makes me depressed and slows down learning so I try not to take it regularly until I get advice from professional.

I live in Canada, and stupidly patients must have referral from a family doctor (primary doctor) to see a specialist. My family doctor seems like made referral pretty quickly as he told me he will get a psychitrist as soon as possible, but never knew he would refer me to psychosis program. Anyway, it's worth a try. If it doesn't work I'll ask my family doctor to get a regular psychitrist who specializes in anxiety or something like that.

Thank you for advice =)

Yes, yes. I know that SSRI's are not so effective to treat SAD. How is your Nardil experience btw? Does it make your thinking slow just as SSRI's usually do? I could give a try if it has less side effects than SSRI's. Doesn't Nardil "poop out" easily btw?

Nardil 60mg for social phobia has been extremely effective for me. I am 6'0" and 180lbs. Symptoms, particularly palpitations and flushing, begin to reappear at 45mg. I derived no benefit from SSRI's.

Do you take the 60mg in divided doses? Do you feel euphoric...have you ever stopped it?

Social phobia is NOT early psychosis. It may cause some depersonalization and some derealization and maybe even a little dissociation, but it is not psychosis. terrics

I used to take it in divided doses, morning and evening. Now I usually take 45mg about a half hour before bedtime, because I can usually expect it to make me drowsy for a brief period. However, sleep in the second half of the night tends to become lighter using this dosing method. I have difficulty arousing from sleep in the morning, so the lighter sleep the second half of the night makes it easier for me to get up. I did experience euphoria the first couple months, but now believe some of what I initially interpreted as euphoria was actually mild serotonin overload. I can re-create the sensation by taking entire 60mg dose at once. I began taking it in 1988 and did discontinue it when I enlisted in the military four years later. Began basic training with minor withdrawls and absolutely no drive, but the physical activity and mental stimulation for eight solid weeks was tremendous rehab. I did experience several depressive episodes over the next three years while on active duty, but never resorted to medication. A week after ending military service, I reintroduced Nardil and kept an active physical exercise regimen of running and basic calesthenics.
