Fourth day on Zyprexa...do the side-effects pass?

Posted by BIGDaddyachmed69 on March 6, 2004, at 17:15:44

I'm new to this board...I've been diagnosed with depression, GAD, OCD, and social anxiety. I'm currently taking 75 mg of Paxil CR, 200 mg of Lamictal and I was recently prescribed 2.5 mg of Zyprexa after explaining to my psychiatrist that my OCD was getting worse. This is the fourth day I've been on it, and I've been having more dreams than usual...they've been getting more and more disturbing. Does this pass? Also, last night I went to an AA meeting and I felt really anxious...like I wasn't fully there. This is unusual since the Paxil has been taking care of that...it could be because I missed my dose, I'm not sure. But last year I was prescribed Risperdal, and had a similar reaction...luckily I don't feel depressed the way I did on Risperdal. Anyway, I've been sleeping more than usual lately and feel cloudy...I hope this passes because my OCD is a bit better today. Does anyone have suggestions, or share a similar experience while on Zyprexa?

I took 10 mg zyprexa for about 5 years. Zyprexa is very theraputic. The dreams and all the other side-effects you become used to and they are more tolerable. I lived a very normal life on the zyprexa for the 5 years, now I'm coming off the high dose to 5 mg, the bad dreams are going away, and I feel great and normal again. I probably would not have made it through the first 5 years with out that dose. True zyprexa can take away from socializing, that I noticed, I had good freinds the hole way, but I didn't have as easy a time convaying what was on my mind, socialy. The bast thing for the dreams is to get out and do stuff dayly and force your self out of bed on no more than 8 hours sleep, you realy will be fine once you are up, if not lower the dose. I also suggest drinking caffine in the day. Especialy the morning first thing.

Any other questions I would be happy to answer.

Sebastian

YES!! I can relate 100%...the dreams DO pass but might take a couple of weeks. My dreams relate around family tragedies and being very angry with my Mum and Dad (freudian interpretation please!?)

Also it makes me very worried aboiut everything the first couple of days (or the first couple of days after dose increase)

Just after the dreams stop then my OCD symptom is CRUSHED! Zyprexa clears this OCD though, fixation very well...

So be patient!

Hi BIGDaddyachmed69 :
The following quote caught my eyes;
>>> last year I was prescribed Risperdal, and had a similar reaction...luckily I don't feel depressed the way I did on Risperdal. <<<
In my knowledge from my personal experience along with the reading/hearing, this med., Zyprexa is Atypical med., and its property/effectiveness is quite similar to Risperdal you took in the past. Just Risperdal is more potent than Zyprexa.
Normally, one of the AP med., Risperdal did NOT help the symptoms you have, then the same form of med., Zyprexa might NOT alleviate the symptoms, either, because their properties/effectiveness is quite similar, just Risperdal is more potent than other APs, thus works more likely for delusional and psychotic features,.
In my guess, .... 'disturbing dreams' might be related to Anxiety you have. Thus, if disturbing dreams would continue/progress, you may need to talk to your pdoc., because without any noticeable benefit from Zyprexa, it's better to search for other form of med. that does not produce 'bad dreams,' because it's important to sleep as peaceful and comfortable as possible.

Besides this, above, in my personal experience, OCD is often brought by depression and other form of M.I. However, this may vary from person to person along with the severity of your mental disorder.
H.G.

I was on 20 mg Zyprexa for 2.5 years. I had many bizarre dreams when I first started. After a while, I only experienced vivid dreams, but they were not bizarre and/or disturbing.

I was at the end of my rope when I started Zyprexa and it allowed me to rebuild my life and function at a high level again. I have since switched to Geodon due to weight gain, but Zyprexa was a miracle drug for me.

Best of luck,

Girl

Hey...the dreams have passed, and I really feel the Zyprexas is helping. My OCD is better and I feel calm and less depressed...I was on Geodon last summer and reacted badly to it. Within an hour, it became impossible for me to stay awake. I also felt an inner feeling of restless...I probably should have just taken it at night. I hope it works out for you :)
