Cognitive Enhancers for inattention/Bipolar

Posted by PsychoSage on February 28, 2004, at 12:32:37

How do you guys convince a doctor to put you on Deprenyl or an Alzheimer's drug? What are your experiences with talkng abut this? My prescriber brought up Parkinsonian drugs, but how do I further the dialogue. I am unfamiliar with the side effects and interactions. I take a mood stabilizer, wellbutrin and provigil already. I guess I am wondering about the extent of off-label use. I have been playing the meds game for more than 6 years, and I really want to try what is out there.

I guess my curiosity list is: Aricept [suggested by my prescriber]
Namenda, other aricept type drugs like reminyl, seliginine.

I am just clueless about what the actual experience with these drugs is like. I only understand the feeling of stimulants.

When don't you just leave your doc to decide? He'll give you Aricept or Reminyl, and they both have the same results.

My first two p-docs kept giving me blank stares when I suggested that I try Aricept, started back a couple of years ago, for my ADD. Then my third, who's super-trendy, he actually knew what studies I was referring to and had experience with them. He said he had mixed results with patients. But we were focusing on trying other drugs at the time, so we never got around to it. Now my forth pdoc gives me the blank stare again. "But Aricept is used for dementia!" He says. Yeah, Sherlock, it is... but MGH Boston is having good results lately in Aricept trials for ADHD. Similiar results with Reminyl.

I gave up selling him on it after he said that, and I'm waiting for some Hupercytriazine-A (sp) arriving in the mail soon.
