NERVOUSNESS- what meds are you on?

Posted by Lainy on February 6, 2004, at 23:08:24

I have been posting a lot about my nervousness. I now wondering what medications others are taking or have taken for severe nervousness. Also, if you are not taking a med for this but know of some please post them for me. THANK YOU!

Lainy, I just started Remeron and I feel much better. It's technically approved for Depression, but the literature indicates an anxiolytic effect, too, which it seems to have. The "gold standard" to battle anxiety/nervousness that accompanies depression is usually Paxil or Effexor, but both often bring on sexual side effects within days of treatment initiation. Remeron, on the other hand, rarely causes sexual side effects. There are also pure anti-anxiety meds like Buspar or Benzos that attack anxiety without much effect on depression. Good luck with whatever you try, and don't give up until you find the right cocktail for you!

I took Gabitril (32mg/day) + Celexa (40mg/day) and found the results equal to Klonopin but with less memory impairment.

I take Strattera, 80 mg/day, nortriptyline 75 mg/day, buspirone 30 mg/day and klonopin .25 mg/day. Did benzos intially work for you and then poop out? or were they totally ineffective from the beginning? One other Q if you don't mind: Did your nervousness ever respond to alcohol? Mine did but I found the effect so short-lived that I had to drink steadily through a night to maintain an effect. This would have killed me eventually, if I didn't decide to stop drinking altogether and find more sustainable ways to control my anxiety.

Yes, benzos did work for me for many years...and then suddenly stopped...very suddenly. And yes, when I did drink I would need to drink as you did, but now I don't drink alcohol...it only messes up the medication effect.

Do you have any type of trigger for your nervousness? If it's anxiety, are you or have you tried any type of therapy? I used to have severe nervousness, and still do, to a point. I have a pacifier in my mouth when I'm not smoking. But, it's improved dramatically since I've started therapy... Just a suggestion... Also, neurontin helps me sometimes when I become very anxious. I used to take quite a bit, but since therapy, I take maybe 300 mgs once every 3 weeks or so, as needed...
