I've got to throw in the towel with desipramine

Posted by Chairman_MAO on February 1, 2004, at 11:17:23

Well, I spoke to my doctor, and his orders were that if my resting heart rate is above 100, I've got to stop the desipramine. It was 84 before I even got out of bed this morning, and now, sitting at my computer, it is 105-110.

Another antidepressant to throw on the pile of antidepressants that are not acceptable for one reason or another. This is a shame, because it was giving me a truly vigorous response. I wish he would just give me Parnate so I could get off of this merry-go-round, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Hell, he wouldn't even give me _Serzone_ because of "cardiac effects". Then why give me desipramine?!? Dopamine agonists are not an option he will consider, either. If I had insurance/money I'd already be doctor-shopping.

Time to sink back into my ADD/dysthymic fog and wait for the next appointment. Maybe I should try Wellbutrin *again* and just increase the Trileptal so it doesn't make me feel like climbing up the walls with my fingernails and screaming at my creator with reckless abandon.

Well, at least I'll be non-impotent & non-constipated.

*sigh*

I had the same problem with effexor. It worked wonderfully but it gave be high pulse as well.

I don't know about parnate though, it is very stimulating as well. It gave me a pulse of over 120.

If you do really well on a medication, there is no reason why the doctor shouldn't prescribe a beta blocker or something.

I think the tachycardia was due to desipramine's direct effect on the heart in addition to its stimulating effect. I used to take 40mg of dextroamphetamine/day and didn't get such a high pulse! If I took a beta blocker, would I still be able to exercise normally? I think I'm going to try Wellbutrin once more given that I'm on a mood stabilizer unlike when I tried it in the past, but if that doesn't work, it's either desipramine or an MAOI, so I suppose I won't have much of a choice about the beta blocker.

I realize this isn't an immediate solution, but you might be able to bring your heart rate down by swimming, esp. if you do intervals. When I swam regularly my resting pulse was 60.
