Need suggestions PLEASE

Posted by Whiplash1974 on January 1, 2004, at 13:49:20

Hello. I am a 29 year old male. I was on zoloft two years ago. It worked great. Then I was added dexadrine for my ADHD three months after that. I was absolutely unstoppable for about six months, then crashed hard.
I have tried several differant antidepressants,(Paxilcr,Remeron,Effexorxr) And none of them had any positive effect on me. I am really at the end of my rope and need some advice on what might help. Thank you very much. ( I cannot take anything that might make me lethargic or sleepy, as I am having a hard time to motivate myself right now)I just want to find an antidepressant that actually helps. I feel like shit all the time and have no motivation or energy.

Dexedrine will make you feel like shit all by itself. The higher you get from it (and you did get quite high it seems), the harder your withdrawal will be. Withdrawal lasts for weeks, gradually diminishing.

How long did you give the SSRIs to work? At least three months I hope. Otherwise you're not really giving them a chance. You might want to try Prozac -- it's a little on the speedy, rather than sleep-inducing -- side.

I take Lexapro, which makes me sleepy. I've found that if I just get my ass moving I'm actually okay and energetic. Also, I've found a plain ordinary "Stay Awake" pill (caffeine) gives me enough motivation to fight off the SSRI's mild sedative effects.

If Paxil doesn't do it for you, you might consider Lexapro with a caffeine chaser.

Good luck!

wellbutrin - i love it(as much as you can love AD's.) none of teh others helped me either, well except effexor but i had awful side effects. give it a try, it has some side effects but it really lifted my depression. and i don't believe it makes people tired, more the opposite. good luck

Whiplash, be advised Wellbutrin and Lexapro go in completely different directions! Each has proven effective for people where the other hasn't. Each must be given a fair chance. The question is, which one do you try first?

I'd try the Lexapro. It's the latest and greatest of the SSRIs, with the mildest side effects and yet an excellent track record of effectiveness.

Wellbutrin is not an SSRI. For many it works well but it never agreed with me. That does NOT mean it won't work for you!

From my personal experience, which could be completely different from yours, I'd recommend the Lexapro and giving it a good TWO MONTHS to see if it is beneficial.

The side effects will take a couple of weeks to wear off or go away (side effects vary with individuals -- for me it was sweating and sleepiness, both of which are nearly gone after two weeks). As with any SSRI, the actual effect of the medication is complex and subtle, and you have to give it time. It's not like taking an aspirin for a headache!

Whichever way you decide to go, good luck! Let's hope 2004 is your turnaround year.

- John

Thank you for your advice John. I still dont know which one to take. My symptoms vary, mostly are mild forms of anxiety..i.e( nervous around others, standing in line at the grocery store, constantly worried). What about prozac? I know these are all differant meds. I just dont want to have the sleepy effect. I find that so hard to get over and motivated. I want to take something like xanax for the anxiety, but dont want to get a addicted either. I have mild forms of depression, bad thinking, NEVER suicidal though. I would never harm myself, and I am very care to what I put in my body. If you have any experiances with any Ad, or know anyone who has, please tell. Thanks alot and have a great day.
