Which are good med options for OCD/Social Anxiety?

Posted by sarita0001 on December 7, 2003, at 19:02:59

Hi,

Prozac didn't work out so I am thinking Luvox is next. How is Luvox? Anyone had experience with SSRI's that don't cause thinning of hair?? Don't want to try an MAOI.

Thanks
Sara

in my case:
Social-anxiety: Klonopin, Xanax, Ultram, Amisulpride, Adderall/Dexedrine
OCD: Ultram

My vote is for Klonopin. It is the only med I take. I use a low dose and have had very few, if any really, side effects and I've used it for over a year and a half. I can't speak for help with OCD, as it not part of my issues.
I also use some alternative suppliments which have helped me. Good Luck.

I am diagnosed schizoaffective, with definite social anxiety / agoraphobia. I have just started taking Zyprexa 2.5mg, once a day at night, and it is already helping with all the negative symptoms (depression, anxiety, inhibition) and the positive ones (ideas of reference, audible and visual hallucinations). With your OCD/SA combo, Zyprexa may work, because OCD is driven by delusional thought processes that one does not control. Ideas of reference are somewhat similar in structure. I suggest you ask your doctor about Zyprexa, and see what you can find online about anti-psychotic treatment specifically for OCD/SA.

Depending on your condition, SSRIs may do more harm than good (although they're worth a try). Just a hunch, but if you can, try Klonopin and I suspect you'll feel much better. Give it a week or two to get over side effects like sedation etc.

Good luck!

another vote for klonopin- very low side-effects and it works well too. best of luck and remember to taper your SSRIs if you have to so you don't get any rebound or withdrawal.- judy

Klonopin, definitely! Start low and see how much you need to reduce/eliminate symptoms. I've had much better results with it than 2 diff SSRI's and BuSpar. As Viridis says, allow for about 2 weeks of sedation side effects. Then expect CALM CONFIDENCE!!! (My experience, anyway).
You might consider adding Picamilon as well, if you're interested in "alternatives". Best wishes.
