Anyone tried Librium for anxiety?

Posted by Jasmine Neroli on September 20, 2003, at 0:08:40

In my ongoing search for potential "back-up" meds, if my current regime doesn't work-out, I was wondering if anyone had used (Chlordiazepoxide) Librium with success, and what it's down-sides might be?? It seems to be little discussed here and I know it's one of the "old-school" benzo's, like Valium. So might be considered too sedating/addictive.
Thanks a bunch!

Hi Jasmine~WOW I haven't heard that med in a long time. Back in 1994, before I had started any psych meds, my PCP doc put me on Librium for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I was having excruciating pain with tests results *normal*
Librium was a great med:-) for me anyway.
It did calm me down a lot.
Anything else you would like to know from my experience~please ask:-)
Take care.

I was prescribed Librium (Chlorodiazepoxide) for anxiety. I didnt notice much of a difference. I slept very well. However I apparently became 'dependant', as when I discontinued it I would have svere anger and rage attacks until I took it again. Not to scare you, this was my experience.

Thanks Gal: Yes, I would like to know a little more 1) Did you find it sedating/lowering energy?
2)Did you begin to feel tolerance and have to increase the dose ... if so, how quickly? 3) How about mood effects? Irritability, anger, euphoria?
4) Weight gain?
Thanks a lot for your info and interest.

Hi Jas,
>>>>1) Did you find it sedating/lowering energy?

I found it slightly sedating, but as far as it lowering my energy level goes, I had the same amount while I was taking it. It didn't seem to affect my energy any.

>>>>2)Did you begin to feel tolerance and have to increase the dose ... if so, how quickly?

Nope, I never experienced tolerance at all, and only had to increase the dose once because I was really stressed out and my tummy was hurting so bad. That's as far as I had to go, was increasing it only once.

>>>>3) How about mood effects? Irritability, anger, euphoria?

Yes, it did alter my mood a little bit, I felt sad, but I was depressed to begin with when I started it. I think I felt a little anger too.
No euphoria at all.

4) Weight gain?

I lost weight when I was taking Librium.

Also, I had hot flashes and developed a low grade fever when taking it.
Hope this helped.

Being prescribed Librium for alcohol withdrawal, it GREATly reduced my anxiety and stress. I loved it too much. Probably a great potential for abuse. Side Effects were minimal compared to alcohol withdrawal.
