New User Scared of Previous Posts

Posted by Wildflower on August 26, 2003, at 12:47:58

I'm a new user of Lexapro (2 days now) and I'm starting to do some research on the drug. Honestly, these postings have really scared me.

I was on Effexor and then Prozac for a while and I quit cold turkey about a year ago. Since then I've gained about 12 lbs. - probably from stress eating - and I can't sleep no matter how tired I am. The reason the doc put me on this is because of my tiredness and weight gain. Is Lex going to make everything worse for me? Help!

Is anyone out there doing better on this drug? From your posts, I don't see many positive comments and I really need some positive reinforcement...

Also, what effect does alcohol have with Lex? It would be very noticable to friends and co-workers if I stopped drinking altogether for no reason. Usually I'll have a glass of wine when I'm out. (I'm too embarassed to admit to others I'm on a drug of this type.)

my own personal experiences w/ lexapro weren't very great--i stopped taking it after about 2 weeks and i don't think that you're recommended to drink while you're on it. i feel the same way about not wanting others to wander why i quit drinking/ that i started a medication. i, personally, have found that the effexor isn't affecting the drinking as much as anything else i've been on. i actually quit taking the lexapro after a night of drinking a pretty tolerable amount for me and i blacked out like i never have before. i am not posting this to scare you away from it by any means. that's just my experiences w/ it and w/ the drinking part. on a more positive level though, my cousin is 17 years old and he was having a lot of trouble w/ suicide/ social anxiety and i believe that lexapro has changed his life. he's been on it for about 6 months and he is doing 100% better. so don't let everything you read scare you away from taking it. take care and good luck!!~

I can understand your concern, but everyone is different and meds that are great for some are awful for others. Unfortunately, a trial is the only way to REALLY tell. Please also be aware, while the postings here are great, they may offer a bit of a slanted view, as the postive reaction people may not be posting at the time. Most of us come here for information and "real life" stories. Sometimes, those that are doing great on their meds are not the ones you are finding here.
Good Luck!

I guess I'll have to speak up for those who are doing *better* on Lex...although I had a rough time at the beginning w/se's, I'm doing a lot better now, 6mos., currently @ 20mg. I have had drinks (whiskey, beer) on occassion w/no adverse effects. We are all different so you may not react in the same way to lex, and unfortunately the only way to find out is trail and error. Most of the worst of the se's should taper off and be gone by week 3, many may not notice a *difference* until week 6-8, and I was one of those many. I managed to hang in there w/encouragement from the great people on this board!!!

Best of luck to you!~~~8|8

SSRIs + alcohol, in my experience, have no noticeable interaction.

I'm on week 4 of Lexapro and I guess I'm part of the positive posters concerning Lexapro. I have tried every SSRI out there except Zoloft. I have done very well on Lexapro at 10mg in the morning. At first, it made me tired. It kicked in fast after about 5 days. I haven't cried *uncontrollably* since I started, I am thinking clearer, handling things that used to baffle me, and calming down a bit. I am also on other meds though, and everyone is different.
I've had a few drinks over the years when on these types of drugs and no harm done~~I don't think anyway. I'm still kickin',
Best of luck to you and hang in there!:-)
