Shawn or anyone,
Does anyone have any information on using EEG as part of a psychiatric workup? My pdoc has implemented an EEG screen to monitor medication changes (for selected patients) and perhaps as a mechanism helpful in diagnosing OCD.Shawn, have you come across any studies on EEG? Especially, for depression and/or bipolar.

I just did a quick PubMed search on bipolar disorder and picked out a few articles; you might want to do a search on depression because there's a lot more research available on unipolar depression.

Have you come across any credible evidence that high histamine levels can cause psych problems (depression, ocd)? This was certainly the belief of the late Dr. Carl Pfeiffer. But I never hear doctors, researchers, authors, scientists, etc., today ever mention high histamine as a cause of dep. and ocd. As someone w/ VERY high histamine levels, I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on the subject. Thankssssssssss!!!!

Sorry about the late reply. I don't believe that anyone has shown a clear correlation between OCD or depression and high histamine levels. While you might find high histamine levels in people with OCD and possibly depression, you cannot make the conclusion that high histamine levels are causing the problems. Simply showing that a particular neurotransmitter is "out of balance" in a disorder does not imply a causal relationship between the imbalance and the disorder. I was unable to find any experiments in the MEDLINE database involving the measurement of histamine levels in patients with either OCD or depression; I am aware that some researchers (like Dr. Pfeiffer) have conducted research on this matter in the past, however.

Yeah, I couldn't really find ANYTHING on PubMed re: histamine relating to ocd/depression! Carl Pfeiffer spent YEARS looking at this, apparently no one else does. Take care!
