TCA headache

Posted by daizy on August 7, 2003, at 9:12:51

Has anyone else had bad headaches from TCA's? Lately I have been getting throbbing head upon standing, or doing exercise, any fast movemennt which then continues into a full blown headache. Ive also been getting very tired, and having trouble waking in the mornings. I think Im starting to feel the side effects more now than when I first started, does this mean I should reduce my dose? been 6 months or so now..... Any advise?!

Are you drinking enough water? The headache could be due to a dehydration effect. Apart from that, a dose lowering might help, then if that fails you could switch to a secondary amine TCA like nortriptyline or desipramine that causes less side effects and sedation.

Sorry I'm writing again, I stayed up too late last night and the coffee just kicked in :) It sounds like you are experiencing significant orthostatic hypotension. I had that side effect when I started nortriptyline last year but it's virtually gone away although I'm on a much higher dose (75 mg/ day). As I said before the secondary amines have fewer side effects including less of the kind you describe.

Thanks for the advise, I will try lowering my dose next prescription. I'll also try drinking more water, I have noticed that the headaches seem to get worse in the heat, and if I go in direct sunlight. I would like to change meds, but that extremely difficult for me here in UK! thanx again!
