Yes I believe there is a connection between the two. My mother and I are both bipolar and we both suffer headaches.

I describe it as a pressure in the back areas of my head when I am manic.

When something is working to relieve the mania, it also releieves the pressure in the back of my head.

This may be different from what you are experiencing.

Are you taking any medication for bipolar ??

Good Luck

There was a thread very recently, probably in one of the last two or three archives, about the relationship between epilepsy, migraine, and bipolar. I'd try to find it for you, but my head is really hurting, sinus infection I think. I don't think the search works that recently.

From what I remember there is a link between all three. I did some research after that and found some interesting links myself on google.

I have been diagnosed with cyclothymia (which is on the bipolar spectrum) and migraines. Many of the mood stabilizers used to treat cyclothymia are actually used as a migraine preventative. Although as I'm sure you know, it's possible to react in opposite ways to any medication.

hi elisha, I suffer from the same thing. May I ask what antpsychotic med you're taking?? I used to be on Seroquel and I started Topamax (an AED)3 months ago and have been getting super bad migraines recently, which are very rare for me.
Hope to hear back and take care.

Hi
I am not sure if you heard of these meds but the mood stabilizer is called Timonil which is made up of carbamazepine and the antipsychotic is called Clopixol which is made up of Zuclopenthixol.
Thanks for the feedback

From what I understand, yeah, there is a connection between bipolar disorder and migraines... i suffer from both, plus epilepsy as well. Topiramate and divalproex sodium are both used to treat bipolar disorder and prevent migraines, and Lamictal (another mood stabilizer) is useful if you have migraine with aura ("classical" migraine) and I believe, i'm not sure about this though cuz my memory has gotten a bit weird since I started Vivactil, that carbemazepine has a preventive effect as well... and the antipsychotics chlorpromazine, haloperidol, and compazine are all used to treat active migraine symptoms, so you might ask about switching to one of those. Hope that helps.

I take an old fashioned neuroleptic called stelazine for my more severe moods (May, August, October are pretty predictable)... I take reminyl (an alzheimer's drug that works on acetycholine) for side effects. I've noticed that if I take it for awhile (even without stelazine) my headaches are gone. I don't have migraines just daily headaches. I doubt if that is helpful but I thought I'd pass the info on...
