Help, hair loss Lamitcal?

Posted by maryhelen on July 24, 2003, at 13:04:45

I have been on Lamitcal for 3 months now. I had a great response at 150 mg., felt better than I had in 25 years but noticed my hair was starting to thin. The way I was feeling, I didn't care if I had to wear a wig.

This response lasted just over 3 weeks. Have now gone up to 300 mg. No response. Hair thinning badly. Question is, will the thinning continue as long as I am on Lamitcal? Will the hair come back as my body gets used to it? I don't want to be bald now and still feel lousy.

I am also on 90 mg. of Parnate, which I am thinking of stopping.

Any help, please.

Hi MaryHelen,

When I first started Lamictal, I suffered both hair loss and dandruff. Both stopped when I began using a dandruff shampoo containing zinc pyrithione. I don't know if it would help the degree of hair loss you describe.

It seems to be a very common story that someone respond wonderfully to Lamictal early in treatment, regardless of dosage, only to have it disappear within a month or two. It seems to be a better augmentor of antidepressants than a monotherapeutic tool when treating depression.

Sometimes, people need dosages of Parnate exceeding 100mg to respond. I don't know of anything that can be used as a predictor of success with this strategy, but if you are going to try it, you might as well do it as soon as possible. Although I did better on Parnate at 120mg than I did at 80mg, it was an inadequate response, so I stopped taking it.

Am I the only one confused by this? This sounds like Scott as in SLS but it is posted under the name "TJO"? Then up a few posts there are postings by "TJO" signed Tammy. What's going on here? I am not accusing anyone of anything. In fact, I do not think I would be capable of accusing Scott of anything considering how warmhearted he has been to just about everyone on this site throughout the years. I just am confused about what's going on here just curious because I am confused.

JACK

P.S. Perhaps Scott has an alternative personality named Tammy :) (joke)

:-)

Jack, I am so sorry. Tammy and I have been sharing a computer, and we have been careless about changing our names for each post. We'll try to be more aware of this in the future. Tammy and I beg your forgiveness.

I've got some warm fuzzies from your comment about my being warm-hearted. Thanks.

Sincerely,
Scott

maryhelen, my understanding about med-related hair loss is... nobody knows much for sure. You won't go bald -- the thinning will stop at some point. It will start to grow back in while you're on the med, but it may keep falling out periodicially, leaving you with kind of fuzzy looking hair from all the different lengths. Or, you may adjust to it while you're on the med and stop losing hair. It will almost certainly stop falling out when you stop the med. If you want to learn more do a google search on 'telogen effluvium'.

'telogen effluvium'.-------great term! Wow! (nm) » Tabitha
