Need appetite suppressant now! HELP PLEASE

Posted by KRM123 on July 8, 2003, at 22:49:01

I am sorry but this is just another weight gain complaint! SSRI's all make me gain...right now I'm on 50mg of Zoloft and it has worked great to relieve my depression. I don't want to stop taking it, but I'm eating all of the time. I told my pDoc and she says to just cut down on carbs. I try but carbs are all I want! I usually eat very healthy and I exercise plus waitress. I can't lose the weight and I can't control my cravings. Please if there is anything "safe" that really works- please let me know! I've been thinking of augmenting with Meridia or Topamax. Already tried Strattera, Adderall and Wellbutrin. My pDoc isn't really concerned about the weight gain- she prob think I don't have enough "willpower". I would like to suggest something to her soon. I am a young woman and can't stand looking in the mirror. I want to end my obsession with food once and for all!

hi,

i also had weight gain problems with zoloft. i had carb cravings, too.

two things that helped a bit:

*taking chromium picolinate, 200 mcg. it helps to balance your blood sugar so you don't have as many cravings.

*adding real fat to my diet. i was always using 2 percent milk, chicken without the skin, etc. in fact, i enjoy many low-fat meals. but once i started adding butter, whipping cream, olives, nuts, etc. to my meals, i felt much more stable.

good luck! i understand; i'm 5'5" and have gained 50 pounds in the last 4 years -- to 180!

Thanks for the info Books...I have tried the Chromium before but I don't think I had a very good brand.- might try again. I am 5'5 also and would like to lose at least 15 lbs before September. The Zoloft seems to screw with my metabolism. If I eat good and exercise then I can maintain the weight I am now but prob won't lose. It's a never ending battle...

You may want to try Sanorex (mazindol) for weight loss... it's a norepinephrine/dopamine reuptake inhibitor, schedule IV controlled substance. It'd surely help to curb your appetite, if that's the problem... as would Meridia, though I'd be wary of its serotonergic action interfering with your Zoloft. If however, as you're speculating, the Zoloft is messing with your metabolism, you may want to consider going a different route. And while I'm very much against low-fat diets for losing weight (I've noticed that those who use low-fat diets tend to have an "aged-beyond-their-years", hagard, worn out appearance), Xenical may be a good option. It blocks the absorbtion of dietary fats. If you go this route though, I'd highly recommend you either eat a lot of fish high in EFA's or take fish oil, flax seed, and borage oil supplements-- a tablespoon of olive oil a day doesn't hurt either.

Low-carb is definitely the way to go though. L-carnitine is great at reducing carbo cravings, as is chromium (but only use the polynicotinate form, NOT the picolinate--it causes DNA-damage!!). There are also carbohydrate and fat blockers available OTC... I take one that works rather well; It's called "Block Carbohydrates & Bind Fat". I bought it at GNC for rather cheap. It contains (per 2 tablets):

60mg Vitamin C
500mg Phaseolamin® (extract of northern white kidney bean Phaseolus vulgaris)
500mg LipoSan-ultra™ (marine fiber concentrate
16mg Glucosol™ (Lagerstroemia speciosa leaf extract) (1% corosolic acid)
250mg Gymnema sylverstre leaf extract (25% gymnemic acid)
50mg Bitter Melon Fruit (from 4:1 extract)
100mcg Vanadium (as BMOV)

Good luck!

Hi!

Zoloft, like all ssris, screw up your glucose metabolism and therefore the only thing you can do to lose weight is to cut the carbs/sugar in order to keep your blood glucose from spiking.

Sadly, that is the ONLY thing that ever worked for me after gaining weight rapidly on Zoloft and being already overweight. The results are, in fact, dramatic.

If you have food cravings, I second the suggestion to eat more fat in your diet. Sounds crazy, I know, but it absolutely worked for me.
Best of luck,
jflange

Ame, Thank you so much for all of the info. I really appreciate it. I am going to ask my pDoc about the Sanorex. I think I would rather take something like that then something OTC. I have tried many things and they've made me sick. However I might try the GNC carb blocker that you mentioned. I just really want something to take away the cravings! Thanks so much again.

jflange- Thank you very much for the info. Do you know where I could learn more about how the SSRI's screw with glucose metabolism?? I am interested in learning about that.
Everyday I try to cut out the carbs and eat better, but it's like I don't have enough willpower or something! I constantly have an irritating hunger feeling in my stomach and have lost satiety after eating.
I'll keep trying- thanks!
