Help!!! Spaceyness

Posted by Edgefield on July 5, 2003, at 20:01:20

Alright...I discussed this before, but it has been awhile, but is there anyone who has experienced derealization 24/7, who is not free from this anxiety symptom? Mine came about after my first panic attack.

I've found considerable relief from Wellbutrin, but maybe I need to add something else to get rid of the remaining spaceyness....

Any suggestion?

Thanks for listening, and responding.

Edgefield,

What dose of Wellbutrin are you on? Are you taking the regular or the SR version? I ask because I found a major difference between the two and their effect on my 'spaciness'.

My pdoc a couple of years back added Buspar (buspirione) to the mix to help cut the edge of aggitation the WB SR was causing. I am currently taking 100 mg WB SR 2x/day, 75 mg WB regular 1x/day, 60 mg Buspar split into two 30 mg doses for a.m. and p.m., and I'm working with my pdoc on finding the right dose of Klonopin (clonazepam) to balance this delicate cocktail I have going.

I found Wellbutrin has shot my number/date/math part of my brain to pieces. I cannot even balance my checkbook anymore or schedule anything worth a darn. Compared to the other SSRI meds I've gone through over the past decade this is an acceptable side effect for me. I also use acupuncture to help me stay a bit more grounded.

I think you asked about brain fog being similar to derealization in an above post? I don't think (but I cannot speak for others) that that is what people mean. When I use the term brain fog I am referring to the feeling of cotton stuffed into my head and my brain not being clear. As someone who also deals with ptsd I experience dissociation/derealization from time to time and it is an entirely separate thing from the brain fog.

Brain fog to me is like an extended mental fart for lack of a better term.

Derealization is almost, if not entirely, an out of body/mind experience.

Am I making sense? Or just confusing you more?

Hope this is of some help.

I've had a rough day (see over on PSB) and am drinking to soothe the wounded beast within.

Best wishes to you and will gladly answer any questions regarding the matters you have brought forth.

kindly,

zenhussy

Thanks Zenhussy for the explanation of brain fog. I have a better understanding.

You wanted to know about the Wellbutrin that I'm taking, well I take 200mg Wellbutrin SR and 75mg Wellbutrin. Which one caused you to feel spacey? My pdoc suggested that I take the full 275mg. once a day. I take it in the evening and it doesn't affect my sleep at all.

I'm sorry to hear that you had a rough day. I pray that you will feel better, naturally, by the time you read this post :)

Did you experience any pains in your fingers or joint with Buspar? I could only take about 15mg a day. Anything over that amount produced severe pains in my hands and elbow. What is strange is that this only occured in my left hand.

Thanks for replying.

Edgefield,

You're on same WB dose as moi. Kewl. I think both the WB SR and the WB regular make me 'spacey' to an extent. For me it was more of a toxicity effect that built up when I was taking just the WB SR at dosages up to 450 mg/day (split of course cuz of the hype about seizure risk...it is there but is overhyped to an extent). It wasn't so much a spacey feeling instead I became physically ill quite often without warning (I think it was the meds building up in my system) and I'd have about three to seven days of gastrointestinal woes and very little I could do about it other than ride it out. I have every tummy remedy known to mankind from the pharms. to the herbals. I found the combination of the regular WB and the SR version to keep the 'toxicity levels' in me from happening quite so frequently.

The regular WB seemed to kick in with a punch that floored me. I had to cut my caffeine back to barely a half mug of coffee in the a.m. I never drank pop or tea with caffeine but I'll be damned if I give up my last vice!! The SR version seems to not kick in with such a punch so the combination of the two are a much better fit than any other med I've tried over the past decade.

As for the Buspar I haven't noticed any side effects from it other than slight grogginess when I increased from 40 mg to 60 mg/day(which I did by 5 mg slowly building up from the 40 to the 60 over many weeks). No joint pain. To have it on just the left side is quite odd but with all our wiring and how different we all are ya just never know. Sorry that Buspar isn't the one to help with the WB. Have you discussed augmenting the WB with another med with your pdoc?

You are quite fortunate that the WB doesn't bother your sleep. Consider yourself lucky there!!

Thank you for the kind words regarding my rough day. It has drained every last drop out of me and I'm utilizing the only coping mech. I have available out here---booze and lots of it! Nah, just a bottle of vino a night (which is more than I've been able to handle in more than three or four years). So I'm not 'naturally' feeling better but drinking away the hell today has been.

I wish you well and hope that you find a good combo to go along with your WB mix.
