How does Lamictal effect the brain, whats it do?

Can anybody explain to me its method of action? And most importantly is it susceptible to poop out?

I personally don't have any idea if there's any kind of poop out potential with Lamictal but I do know for a fact that it is a calcium channel blocker. With regard to pre-synaptic neuronal functioning, calcium is required for most neurotransmitter release. So, you could imagine how this would be good for "quieting" neurons in the case of seizures or functioning as a mood stabilizer for bipolar treatment. As far as I know, Lamictal very often used for seizures and bipolar disorder

Do some searches on pubmed.com . It involves blockage of voltage gated ion channels, basically electrical conductivity related processes in the brain. It also blocks certain calcium channels. Still doesn't tell you much, i know.

What drives me crazy about Lamitcal is, how can we have such an excellent response and then it 'poops out'?

Do we start to tolerate it? For me, after the initial excellent response at 150 mg, something I have never experienced in 25 years, I simply was not depressed and felt great.

I am now up to 225 mg. and wonder if I will ever get that response again.

An excellent but confusing med.

Maryhelen, How long were you taking Lamictal before it pooped out on you? What else do you know about Lamictal?

Happened to me too (nm)

Thanks for your interst Henry O. I have been away for a few days.

I had been on Lamitcal for about 3 weeks before I got to the 150 mg dose. I also take Parnate 90 mg. As I had mentioned, the response was something I never thought I would ever xperience. This lasted for 2 weeks and I am slowly slipping again into an area I am terrified of.

My pdoc wants me to go up 25 mg. a week until I reach 300 mg. I am at 225 mg. now, but feel horrible.

What I know about Lamitcal is what I am learning here.

Any help would be appreciated.

I think that sometimes what we think is poop-out is our disease spiking up through the medication. Stick with the Lamictal I don't think it can hurt. I was in real pain waiting for it to start working, even now I have my days. I will say that I am at 200mg now and feeling alright. I hope you get that effect soon. We are all so different though.
