Q to LarryRon - howwhen to take supplements

Posted by btnd on June 22, 2003, at 13:59:46

Ok currently here is my stash of supplements for my general health and mood-stabilizing effects :

1) vit.E (800-1600mg) + vit.A
2) vit.C (1-2g)
3) nicotinamide (up to 1500 mg)
4) magnesium carbonate (500-2000 mg)
5) fish oil omega-3 (5000 mg)
6) evening primrose oil GLA (50-100 mg)
7) pantothenic acid/B5 (up to 2000 mg)
8) b-complex (2-3x/day)
9) alpha-lipoic acid (500-1000 mg)
10) zinc gluconate (15-30 mg)
11) vit.B6 (50mg)
12) enada nadh (rarely)

I don't take all of them everyday (except fish oil/evening primrose oil/nicotinamide) but my questions are:
1) how often should I take above supplements?
2) are the doses appropriate (not harmful)?
3) which of the above should be taken with meal and which on empty stomach? what harm could be done if I'd take any of the above on empty stomach? is there possibility of kidney/liver damage with prolonged use of any of the above?

I appreciate your input.
Take care,
Brad

As often as you feel like it, IMHO. I have come to have some faith in my "gut feelings". I know when I've not taken my supps often enough. My gut tells me.

There's a little bit of philosophy behind that....it *may* be possible to make yourself dependent on supplementary nutrition, just as a spoiled rich kid may become dependent on a trust fund. By making your intake a little bit intermittent, you are more likely to keep the gut "machinery" a little bit "hungry" for nutrients to take up.

You could take more evening primrose (or borage oil). And, I think that's a pretty high dose of alpha-lipoic. That said, I don't think you can hurt yourself with ALA.

I would take everything on this list with food, except the NADH. The only other supps that work best on an empty stomach are free amino acids (e.g. tyrosine, DLPA).

Digestion isn't just about breaking down food. It is also the time that your body "turns on" associated processes that enhance uptake of certain nutrients. Some stuff, like B-vitamins, will be absorbed from an empty stomach, regardless, but fats (like fish oil) don't do so well on their own.

>what harm could be done if I'd take any of the above on empty stomach?

Indigestion. Why bother?

>is there possibility of kidney/liver damage with prolonged use of any of the above?

No.

No problems there, either.

Since you're into some good supps, I'd suggest adding 200 mcg/day selenium. Maybe some methylcobalamin (B-12).
