SAM-e

Posted by disney4 on June 11, 2003, at 15:08:47

Sam-e seems like a sure bet when I read all the literature out there, yet when I tried it, I felt tired and had no other noticable effects. Could it have been the brand? I used the Nature Made, which is very highly touted. Has anyone used other brands and had positive results?

I had the same experience with Nature Made- no noticable effect at all. I would love to hear experiences of people who've had success with SAM-E and the brand and dosage they are using.

Disney/Peter:

I used the Nature Made SAM-e on and off for a year at doses of up to 1600mg/day. For me, it had a very, very mild anti-depressant affect, most noticeably, it seemed to relieve some of the anxiety-tension I carry around in my torso. However, the stuff seems to "poop out" a lot. After a couple of months of use, I can't tell if it's having an affect anymore. I have tried other brands with similar results. Frustrating. Have either of you had any luck with any other "natural" treatments for anxiety/depression?

I used Nature Made SAM-e and other supplements (magnesium, 5HTP, etc) to attempt to manage anxiety and depression associated with Fibromyalgia. Overall, I do think I slept better and didn't cry as often, but I still had occasional serious bouts of anxiety. Now I'm on Lexapro and was told to avoid adding SAM-e, kava, St. John's Wort, valerian, etc.

I got a mild anti-depressant effect from 400-600 mg/day, I used it for around 3 weeks. It screwed up my sleep big time so I discontinued it.

Are you getting adequate levels of B vitamins everyday? If you aren't.. SAM-e will not work. Try adding a B-complex tab everyday if you're not taking one already.

I appreciate all the replies. I am at wits end with my depression. I am excercizing every day and taking Neurontin as a mood stabilizer and klonopin at bedtime for sleep, but I am still pretty depressed. I can't tolerate traditional AD's. Tried almost all of them with intolerable SE's. I am now waiting for that new AD/anxiety med called Gepirone, which will be marketed in early 04.

Elsie, I feel really bad for you that you are depressed and have had no luck with antidepressents due to the side effects.

I know that for me personally, I would rather have side effects if it meant getting rid of depression. But I guess that if my side effects were terrible, I'm not sure what I would do.

For me Lexapro, which I am currently on at 20 mg, gives me less side effects than I felt on Prozac. The only really bothersome side effect it gives me is tiredness, but not as bad as the tiredness I had on Prozac. Also, I don't get tired anymore because I eat a 1 ounce serving of dark chocolate around 10 or 11 am each morning. It gives me energy all day. Dark chocolate is also good for lowering cholesterol and blood pressure.
