PLEASE name your favorite prosocial drug!!

Posted by Michael Bell on June 3, 2003, at 21:56:22

This is p*ssing me off. I feel like my current drug remimen has gotten rid of the social anxiety (physical symptoms, that is), but I can't get rid of the dysthymia without producing more anxiety. So I want everybody who reads this post to name a prosocial/activating drug that didn't poop out or cause anxiety. Does such a thing exist? Adrafinil, Mirapex, Amisulpride, Prozac, Wellbutrin, Zyprexa, Provigil, Permax... any input would be helpful. I'd really appreciate feedback. Thanks!

Also, anybody with MAOI background, is hypertensive crisis a common thing? What was your experience with Nardil, Parnate, etc.?

Hypertension is usually over-hyped. Just be aware of your body and watch what you put in it (certain foods, any other type of drugs) and you'll have nothing to worry about.

I've been lucky so far as hypertension I'm not too sensitive to the foods and drugs on the list.

I have recently been having a problem with hypotension it seems. Lately I've been experienceing what seems to be postural/orthrostatic hypotension which bascially means when I stand in a full upright position I can easily faint (which I have been recently). This has gotten worse lately and I'll be seeing the doctor hopefully tomorrow. Best wishes.

Never tried MAOI's. Of the SSRI's-Prozac and Zoloft worked the best, but they caused major sleep disruption and GI upset (which was very rough-nausea, diarrhea and acid reflux). Neurontin worked well, but I get weird side effects from it, too. If you don't want to hassle with MAOI's you might try a combo of Neurontin+Zoloft+Klonopin.

For me, Klonopin + Adderall (but I have ADD). A bit of Xanax helps too, for very stressful situations. Klonopin rates highest for me.

Nardil of course! Hypertension very rare (with me) (nm)

I never had any problems with Nardil and I was fairly promiscuous with the forbidden food and drinks. Thats possibly why it didn't work for me!?

As for favourite prosocial drug, I get more benefit from self medicated pikamilone and clonazepam than I did with any prescribed drug (and believe me I've tried them all). However the best (unfortunately) still seems to be alcohol combined with a stimulant :( -but this method can obviously bring about its own problems

I am for Nardil!!!!!

I have been on both Nardil and Parnate...I would have to say, from my experience, that Nardil is better for anxiety, although it is not necessarily pro-social.

I would consider Klonopin and Xanax pro-social, because insted of just relieving anxiety, it seemed to promote social interaction, much like alcohol or GHB..but I think this is just due to disinhibition.

Neurontin (for me at least) was a pro-social med, similar to the social effects I got from GHB...but I don't recommend GHB, or alcohol for that matter.

As a teenager I found MDMA to be very pro-social, but in an artificial way (hard to explain, sorry) but I wouldn't recommend trying MDMA either.

Thanks for all the info! I'm a little surprised to hear people describe Klonopin as prosocial, since I always heard that, while it gets rid of the anxiety, it makes people feel "blah". I guess that just goes to show how different things work for different people.

Klonopin+Provigil is a dynamite combination for me. Klonopin is extremely effective at alleviating my fear of people, allowing my true personality to break through. Provigil (at 100 mg) nicely complements my mainstay Klonopin by adding a hefty dose of outgoingness as well as pleasant, mild stimulation. These two meds definitely don't cancel each other out, as some would propose.

Unfortunately, I've had to cut back the Provigil to occasional use for two idiosyncratic reasons:
-- It can cause a dryness that exacerbates a problem I've got with excessive "gunk" in the throat.
-- It makes my heart rate go through the roof. This is asymptomatic (again, K+P makes me feel pleasantly energetic), but my heart rate already tends to be on the high side (often 90 - 100 bpm), so I don't like seeing it go to 120 or 125.

You mentioned Permax. The most awful drug experience I've ever had was with PERMAX, and that was with the recommended slow titration. That stuff is bad news!!!! Besides the horrible physical side effects, Permax really made me feel dysthmic, and I'm not prone to dysthmia or depression.

Rhodiola Rosea was mentioned at one point. One interesting aspect of good-quality Rhodiola Rosea (Arctic Root is the gold standard) is that it often tends to *lower* heart rate despite its stimulating properties. But its long-term safety hasn't been verified (even though I'd wager it is not only safe but physically beneficial), and, frankly, it didn't do much for me during a few brief trials.

Completely off topic, but as long as I've mentioned the Swedish Herbal Institute: I was skeptical at first, but their product Kan Jang (a standardized, quality andrographis paniculata), taken at double the recommended dose, is almost miraculous in treating the common cold, especially when taken at the first signs.

Rick

Clarification: Arctic Root is from Swedish Herbal (nm)

Klonopin can make you feel blah if you take a bigger dose than necessary, take doses too close together, or take it only occasionally.

For me Xanax was the "blah-y" benzo, and much less effective for Social Phobia than Klonopin.

I agree that Klonopin + Provigil is a very good combo -- I switched to Adderall because it helped more with concentration, but Provigil definitely increased my confidence without making me feel "wired", and it mixed well with K.

I've tried Rhodiola (from SHI) at various doses and never noticed anything in particular, positive or negative. But some others do seem to have strong responses to it.

Improved concentration sounds appealing. As far as Social Anxiety impact in tandem with Klonopin, are there any other plusses or minuses you note for Adderall, especially compared to Provigil? Was your need for increased concentration due to ADD? I don't have ADD (at least I don't think so), but often have a hard time focusing my thoughts.

How much of each med do you take, and on what schedule?

Also, do you have memory problems (perhaps Klonopin "enhanced,") and if so does the Adderall help alleviate them? (I have a feeling I'm asking for some feedback that you may have already posted awhile back, when I visiting this board more often.)

Thanks much,
Rick
