Which antidepressants are the least sedating?

Posted by TR on May 19, 2003, at 20:50:03

I know a lot depends on the person, but which antidepressants out there (tricyclics, SSRIs, MAOIs, whatever) are generally considered to be the least sedating? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Been I almost all TCAs. Protryptiline (Vivactil) is reported to be energizing and it was for me. Had to stop it. I found it too stimulating. Nortryptyline and Desimpramine have little sedative effect but not as stimulating as vivactil. For MAOIs parnate is considered to be more stimulating than Nardil. Had bad insomnia when on it 20 yrs. ago. But some say it makes them drowsy. Eveyone is different. Can't tell you about SSRIs. Never been on one.

Hope this helps-
Paul

Tricyclics are generally considered to be the most sedating - due to anti-histaminic/anti-chollinergic effects. There are certainly exceptions however. SSRIs tend to cause some degree of lethargy in most folks, and strong drowsiness in certain people as well. I noticed this on Celexa, only. MAOIs are probably around the same level as SSRIs sedation wise, though Parnate may be stimulating.

Some non-sedating ADs that don't fit in to these classes would be: Wellbutrin, Reboxetine... uh....
off-label stuff like Strattera, Ritalin, Provigil, Mirapex, etc.
