Prozac or Lexapro? Which packs on more lbs?

Posted by Joanie on March 27, 2003, at 15:09:16

I took Prozac for a couple of years and gained some weight slowly, but surely. Then 'bout 5 or 6 months ago, switched to Lexapro and starting gaining weight quickly! I mean, it almost seemed like a lb. a day. Horrible! I love the happy feeling I have with Lexapro but and quitting it because I've gained so much weight. However, I was wondering if maybe I should go back on Prozac. I know I need something. Isn't there anything to take that can make you mentally feel great AND not make you gain? Has anyone else had this experience - the rapid gaining with Lexapro?
Thanks!

Yes, I also gained quite a bit of weight on Lexapro because of a constant craving for carbohydrates. It was so bad that I went to sleep at night thinking about what I would eat in the morning for breakfast :))) I've since switched to Fluoxetine and I do not have a craving for carbs. and I'm even losing weight. I took Lexapro for about 3 months and I gained about 10-15 pounds. Dispite the weight gain this wasn't the reason that I quit. Overall Lexapro is a good med. if it's well suited for your chemistry.

Hi, I have never taken Lexapro, but I know many people who have taken Topamax, and have lost anywhere from 50 to 100Lbs. When I took Prozac, I gained 80. I would talk to your doc about this.
I also take Lamictal and haven't gained weight-but Seroquel for me is a weight gainer. Remember though, all these meds are so important for us all to feel better and sometimes we have to outweigh the benefits and risks, sux I know
Good luck:-)

Personally I lost weight on Prozac cos I stopped comfort eating. Not a huge amount of weight as I am the right weight for my height.

On celexa haven't gained or lost. Celexa and Lexapro are supposed to be very similar.

lexapro, definitely

Prozac and Zoloft cause the least weight gain.

i gained 30 lbs in 6 months on prozac. ive been on lexapro for 2 weeks now and have lost 7 lbs of that weight gain - but i feel more bloated now on lexapro - its almost as if on prozac i didnt care that i was blowing up, and now on lex im more conscious of the additional weight and feel uncomfortable with it.

good luck to you!

This is just another example as to how we are all unique. With Lexapro I craved carbohydrates, non stop. I'm now going on week 3 of Fluoxetine and I'm losing weight. My appetite as decreased substantially. I eat because I know that I need to, and now my portions are substantially smaller. With Lexapro I could have eaten my meal and the plate :) and still go back for seconds.

Can't speak for Prozac since I have not taken it, but I have lost 6 pounds on Lex. I too am craving Carbs (I could scarf a bag of Chex Mix RIGHT NOW!!!). I find I want to eat a smaller portion at meal time and seem to feel full where before I would want seconds.
