OMG!! Horrendous Nightmares.....

Posted by KrissyP on March 9, 2003, at 12:44:59

Well,
The only "switch" I have made in my med regime is adding 50mg Lamictal at night.
Holy S$#@! 2 Nightmares-and I do NOT usually get them at all:
1) My mom died-I was double-checking to see if she died and I was devastated.
2) Re-occurring nightmare that Iraqi's were protesting to take people (while I was driving) And ask them to fight in the war. In the first dream I said yes-no troubles-they eventually did not pick me and let me go-In the dream my brother told me that if I didn't go-they would kill me. So, This SECOND dream of the SAME scenario-LAST NIGHT-I was stopped, and asked the same thing, I said NO. I went on and stopped at a gas station nearby, and an Iraqi had come in-was speaking foreign tongue, and aimed a gun at me-a BIG gun-and BAM! I woke up.

ALL IN A DREAM-God It scared the living S$#@! outta me :-(
I was thinking that because I suffer a mental illness, that I am extremely sensitive to what is going on around us-concerning the war, etc. I hate to think that but has ANYONE had any feelings the same? Could it be the Lamictal?
BTW-I am going to continue the Lamictal, BUT STILL.....:-( SCARY!
ANY ideas would be sincerely accepted *scared*
Kristen

Yeah it bothers me, and I'm in Canada.

The more dopamine meds I have, it seems
my mind creates vivid scenarios of post
neuclear war life, bad stuff etc. I think
whats happening is bothering everyone to
some degree (may be wrong) but those with
any propensity towards fear, paranoia,
panic, schitsofrenia, could really blow
it out of proportion.

Hey there :-)
I've ALWAYS taken Lamictal before bed and I NEVER had these nightmares-like this-I know it. I honestly think that it has to do with deeper issues-ESPECIALLY the ones concerning this possible war. I have heard that persons' mental struggles. etc, has been and can be exasberated due to what is going on between the US and Iraq.
Why do YOU think Lamictal has to be taken in the morning?????
Please get back,
Thanks, Kristen:-)

Hi again,

Well, Lamotrigine is an activating anticonvulsant which can cause insomnia. Lamotrigine suppresses the release of the excilatory amino acid glutamate and acts indirectly on the NMDA receptors. What does that mean? Lamotrigine is a powerful antidepressant and taken at night it can be activating and cause insomnia. That's all.

Max.

Try taking cal/mag in the evening. It helped me with the really nasty nightmares. Dreams are still vivid but not as frightening.

Hi again:-)
That is soooooooooooo weird because since I started back on 50mg Lamictal at night-I have slept a lot better, in fact, I am able to get by on only 100mg Seroquel instead of 200mg which made me feel really doped up the next day. You are very knowledgeable. I just think it's really weird, but it could explain my mania at night-but then again my mania the last few nights is there BEFORE I even take the Lamictal for the night. *sigh* A lot to think about thank you:-)

Thanks:-) I try to take the "Slow-Mag" I have mentioned in another post. It is 212mg Calcium and 128mg of Magnesium Chloride. Last time I took it though, I got bad diarrhea (sorry for that lol) but I may have taken it on an empty stomach or too much-but it says "2 tablets daily" and that's what I took. There has been so many posts on this Calcium/Magnesium stuff, it helps me with sleep many times, but I'm getting confused on what type, (I know the ratio 2:1) and all the different ingredients.
Take Good Care, Kristen

Two tips on preventing GI distress:

1) Try different brands. Some gave me trouble and some didn't. I use Duane Reade now and it's not causing problems.

2) Take less to start and let your body adjust. The body can take some time to adjust to extra mag.

Good luck.

Thank you:-) will do (nm)

Kristen,

I just started Lamictal about 2 weeks ago and since have had such vivid and also scary dreams, one dream I in the middle of World War III with nuculear bombs flying overtop of me and trying to survive, I felt exhausted when I woke up the next day, curious did the cal/mg work for you?

Thanks,

Gary
