Anybody know?

Posted by Eilidh on March 8, 2003, at 6:49:10

I have read many comments by people who have found their life greatly improved by an maoi, and who eventually stopped taking their specific maoi after a reasonable period of time. However, when the need to recommence taking the same maoi has arisen at a future point, they seem to have found the maoi is not as effective at relieving the symptoms as it was originally.
I am concerned to know if this is what people have experienced generally as I am wondering what my future holds re taking nardil. I would rather take it continuously than stop it in a year or so only to find I can never achieve the same level of reief.
Thanks in advance for any information.

I think it's not just with Nardil, but with a lot of the psychiatric drugs, that they sometimes don't work as well the second time around. Over the years there have been many people here who commented that that had happened to them. The drugs varied widely from lithium to ssri's to maoi's and others.

I was on Paxil for a year and it worked pretty good. Then I went off it for a year. When I had to go back on, it didn't work.

I tried lithium once. I swear it worked in about 3 hours and I could feel myself getting better by the moment. Just the thought of lithium scared me though, especially the way my hands were so shakey, so I didn't take any more. About a week later I tried again out of curiosity. It did nothing at all. It was like sugar.

But based on comments here over time, I think the phenomenon you are talking about is obvious with a lot more drugs than just maoi's.

I agree with John L. However, there have been a few people who did have success the second time around. As with everything, your mileage may vary.

In my opinion, if one knows that the chemical imbalance will probably occur again after stopping a med, it's just as well to stay on the med if it's not causing problems. That would not apply to folks who are experiencing depression for the first time, or it's obviously due to external causes, or something like that.

I've struggled with depression for about 35 of my 51 years, so I just stay on meds (and hope they don't poop out).

Thank you to both you and John for responding Shar. I generally agree with the opinions of both of you. However, it is just that so many people have described taking Nardil once to great effect, and this not being repeated second time around. I had wondered if there was a specific nardil inability to produce the same effect more than once. Many describe chasing the effect second time around with much higher doses, and still not acieving remission comparable to the original experience. Hence my original question.
Thank you.
Eilidh.

Hi, I wish I could be of more help here to you. I have never taken an maoi. "ACE" is the one to ask about Nardil, if you haven't done so already:-) He is very, very knowledgeable about it and a fan of it! I wish you the best,
