Effexor v. SSRI's

Posted by Jack Smith on February 20, 2003, at 17:42:30

I have heard from several people that effexor is considered to be a little more powerful than an SSRI. Does anyone with real experience with both agree or disagree?

JACK

PS I am familiar with their diff't mechanisms of action, I am just wondering what people's experiences with the two are. In other words, save the psychopharmacological lecture for another thread.

from my personal experience, Effexor was the best antidepressant I have ever taken. I guess due to it's dual response of both Serontonin and Noreprenefrine, it worked wonders better than just plain Serotine reuptake inhibitor by itself.

Tommy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jack, I take just a tiny bit of Effexor every day for anxiety, but when I get into serious bipolar depression it is the only thing (except stimulants) that can snap me out of it reliably (at a temporary higher dosage).

I would disagree....

I have OCD/anxiety and episodic depression...

Prozac was hands down the best med I ever tried...Effexor was second best.

I felt more 'real' on Effexor and even though I had anorgasmia (as I did on Prozac), my libido was not at all decreased. I also liked that it was somewhat stimulating and that I lost weight on it.

BUT, Effexor stopped working after a few weeks at the max dose...and even when it WAS working, it wasn't as effective as the Prozac had been.

I've been on Zoloft for a month now (the only other SSRI I've tried)...so far I've felt WORSE...so perhaps it just depends on the SSRI!

In general I think that the SSRIs are superior for treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. But Effexor might be superior for treating straight up depression.

Just my 0.02.

If I had not suffered from unbearable s/e from the Effexor, I would have stayed on it forever. Not only did it take care of the depression, my anxiety was completely wiped away. To me -- and this is only my opinion -- it was the best thing I have tried. However, I was so sick to my stomach the whole time I developed an ulcer from taking it, and gained 40 pounds in 6 months on it. Those together are what caused the final decision to go off it, and though I like the Lexapro I take now, NOTHING worked on my GAD on a daily basis like the Effexor. It would be so nice to be one of those people who can take it with little or no s/e!

This is the end of the thread.
