Respirdal v Zyprexa:which best 4 racing thoughts?

Posted by Janelle on September 2, 2001, at 22:34:52

I have heard that both Zyprexa and Risperdal can help quell anxiety and ruminating thoughts. Any ideas or experience as to which of these is more effective and at what dose? Thanks.

Are you also depressed? That may be a deciding factor in whether to choose Zyprexa or Risperdal, because there is more evidence to support Zyprexa's use in depression-relief.

Yes, there IS also depression. You said that this may be a deciding factor in whether to choose Zyprexa or Risperdal, because there is more evidence to support Zyprexa's use in depression-relief. So, based on this, it sounds like you're suggesting Zyprexa over Risperdal?

How *different* or *similar* are these two meds?
Thanks, Janelle

Janelle, You might want to try Geodon (that's risperdal, right?) first, because Zyprexa causes monster weight gain more often than not. Less often in men, but pretty reliably in women. Although, theoretically, the weight gain can be offset by 300mg Axid, an OTC antacid, twice daily, even pretreating for 5-7 days. That said, Zyprexa is a *lovely* med. . but you don't wanna end up like me, it was *supremely* effective, but 50 lbs later, I had to give it up.

Good luck,
Zo

Hi Zo, well first, I'm not sure (but will check on the 'Net) if Respirdal = Geodon.

As for Zyprexa causing weight gain - do you know the mechanism by which this occurs? Meaning does it somehow automatically add weight or does it *increase* appetite, hunger pangs, etc. so a person on it *eats more*, thereby gaining weight?? Thanks.

Risperdol is risperidone or something like that, whereas Geodon is ZIPRASIDONE.

Resperidone did little if anything. Olanzapine, on the other hand, stopped all reuminations and obsessions. It basically calmed my thoughts. To tell you the truth, it felt as though my emotions and thoughts were dead. I would have stuck with it except for the five pounds I gained in eleven days and the insatiable cravings.

The only other med that has helped with obsessions/reuminations has been anafrinil but I could not tollerate the dirty drug.

Good luck!

Janelle,

My vote would be for Zyprexa. Once you are over your current morning grogginess it is a great drug for ruminating thoughts. I took Risperdal for a couple of weeks and felt like a Zombie. I had no emotions whatsoever while taking it. It was very frustrating. Before I started Zyprexa I had a serious problem with suicidal thoughts and those thoughts cleared up within a week of starting the Zyprexa.

You may also want to talk to your doctor about Geodon. It's more activating than Zy but in the same family of meds. It's supposed to have less side effects especially the weight gain.

Good Luck,
Chris

I still had very disturbing thoughts on my very short trial of Risperdal, while Zyprexa -- even in very small doses (2.5 mg) helped right away.

My father is a changed person because of a low dose of zyprexa. He hasn't gained weight yet, been on it over half a year. Having said that he is severely underweight.

Zyprexa is less likely to cause TD.

Janelle, if your doctor suggests the medication I would give it a trial run. Had I read about the side-effects and withdrawal problems I would have never tried effexor. It is giving me back my life!

BEST WISHES
Willow

My son 19 years old has developed psychsomatic condition. The 1st Dr. I took him to, perscribed Zyprexa, the second one has perscribed Respirdal, I'm very scared, I have read that it causes mania, raise the lvel of sugar in the blood, weight gain, and so many other things, especially that aldough he is doing some strange actions and has invulontry movements too, which by the way are also one of the side effects of these medications, but his copmrehension is still good enough. Besides he refuses to take the medication anyway. Please advise. What should I do? Desperate mother.

I would go with the Zyprexa, I have been for 4 years. It is great for anxiety and bad thoughts. I did gain weight for a while but now I am losing it, 10-lbs in little over a week!

I tried risperdal too but did not like it one bit.

Hi Sebastian.

How much weight did you gain initially?

How much time passed before you started losing weight?

Thanks.

4 years ago I weighed 155lbs, recently I weighed in at 225lbs, and over the last 10 days I have managed to lose 14 of those pounds. Diet and exercise.

I don't eat after 6, and take the pill just befor bed, I also take a tums an hour befor the pill, seems to work great.

Watch out if you take Zyprexa. Memory loss is not rare. I know of
this from my doctor and from my personal experience.

How am I suppose to watch out for Zyprexa and the memory lose side effect of it? I express my concern to the dr. but he says at low dose it is not going to have any side effects, besides he feels that regardless of any probable side effects it is necessary to take the medication anyway.

I have been suffering from memory loss on account of taking zyprexa, for over two years
now. This blockage or "lump some" how some people describe it is permanent unless an antidote is found.
I'm 100% sure it was the Zyprexa that did it. And it lasted even after I quit it.
