12 Yr Old son has a fever again

Posted by Jinx on February 3, 2003, at 19:26:13

First of all, don't worry, I'm a loving, good, responsible mom. I WILL definately take my son to the Doctor if need be. Question - last week he missed 2 days of school because he had a fever and a little bit of a sore neck, fever around 100 to 101. Then he got better and went to school for the rest of the week. Now, he wakes up this morning with another fever of 101.6. He stayed home from school today, (with my older son who didn't feel great either). When I get home from work, he's hot again. Childrens Motrin has always worked great for him as far as fever and making him feel better. But this afternoon, it didn't help much. He was still hot so I had him take a cool shower thinking that would help. It didn't. His fever is now 100.1. If he hadn't taken the shower I'm sure it would be higher. What could cause this weekly fever - coming and going? Any thoughts? Like I said, I will take him to the Dr if fever isn't better by tomorrow. HELP! I love my little Buddy.

i would say take him to the doctor right now and I know it's a pain going to a clinic or ER but you dont want it to be something nasty, and wait.

Umm...you do realize this is a psychotropic-medication messageboard, right?

You might get a more knowledgeable response if you posted to webmd or somewhere more geared towards general-health.

> Jinx, I don't mean to alarm you, but a fever and sore neck could indicate a form of meningitis. Has he been vaccinated against meningococcal C? Early treatment is crucial.

At the very least, being reassured by a medical practitioner will put your mind at ease.

Good luck!

It is obvious that you care deeply for your son. The best thing to do is to take him to the doctor. What concerns me is the recurring fever. At the very least they could check him out for strep throat with a very simple throat swab.

Did you end up taking him? We of course are concerned and would like to know what you ended up deciding.

Thanks! I did take him to the Dr yesterday and he had bronchitis and a sinus infection. Thanks for asking and being concerned. He's feeling much better already!! (So am I!)

I'll bet you are, Jinx. Glad to hear that everything is OK. :-)
