When Nardil Bails Out

Posted by matt66 on January 31, 2003, at 18:50:19

I had an initial response to Nardil (starting almost immediately and lasting for approx three weeks) then it wore off. I've tried EVERYTHING since with no luck. Some trials may have been rushed however. Is there any logic to what I should focus on taking?

A lot of people need to up the dosages, 3 weeks is not nearly enough. Mine didn't kick in till past the 4th week.

Did you give Nardil an adequate trial at therapeutic doses. A three week response immediately does not sound like the real benefits of the drug.

MAOIs need at least eight weeks to settle in and get your house in order. Thry are amazing drugs- and starting them can be a rough ride. An immediate positive response is a really good sign, but the dose needs to be titrated up slowly and that eight to ten weeks is spent getting your brain rewired AND you getting used to how the well people live. Three weeks is not even close to a trial.
I took Nardil for the best six years of my life, and want back on it but I had some kind of physical reaction to it. I'd try it again- and give it time. When it works it's so worth giving up pizza for. Just order chinese instead.

I agree with Missliz. This drug needs to be increased in dose over time, "bumped up" every few weeks until you're at your therapeutic level. You will probably once again feel the benefits if you increase the dose and stick with it. It is a wonderful drug and I too attempted to re-visit it but as is the case for most of us the "second time around", couldn't tolerate some physical symptoms.

Gradual upping the dose is the best strategy, I agree. In my case, 90 mg worked wonders 8 years ago -- after VERY gradual up-dosing.

It's a long story why I didn't stay on it and took so many years to gather up guts to try it again.

THIS TIME, I hit 90 mg after 2 weeks. Harsh, to say the least -- but survivable.

i just want to thank everyone for replying to my "when nardil bails out" post. it gave me much needed hope to hear of others who have been there before. As a follow up to my first question here goes: when the nardil worked (for the initial three weeks), i had no side effects whatsoever. I think i was on 45mg a day. my second trial I went to 90mg, without a response (i was only on it for a week maybe), and my only side effect was insomnia. now I'm going to try holding at 90mg for a while longer, and see if my initial response was not a fluke, and if I just didn't give the higher dose enough time. my question is are there any recommended meds I can take for sleep that might also help augment the effect of the nardil? for me insomnia is NOT A BIG DEAL if I can get a theraputic response, but I was curious if anyone had a similar experience or any suggestions?

3 weeks not nearly enough. Each successive dosage needs time to work. for example just because you have been on 60mg for 3 months if you raise it to 90mg the 90mg needs time to work -- maybe 4/5/6 weeks. Give it another go. I'm sure a lot of poop-out people don't give it the proper opputunity to work.

Hey There Matt, I had a little Insomnia during the initial affects of Nardil. Thought it got a lot better with time. I was waking up at 4am sometimes and not being able to sleep. Gradually I would wake up at 5am, then 6am, then 7am, and now I can pretty much sleep however long I want. Just give it time and I am sure it will improve. Anorgasmia set in also at 75mg/5weeks, that took a whole 4 months to go away but it did, you just need to be patient and enjoy the positve affects your receiving. Believe me I missed orgasms but I knew it would come back and I was right :)
