Lamictal, Zyprexa, and Nardil

Posted by MarkCSF on January 27, 2003, at 23:24:38

Anyone tried this trio together? I have been on Lamictal 150mg for about three months, and Zyprexa 10mg for about 6 weeks. Just added Nardil about two weeks ago, but so far nothing. Maybe worse. Zyprexa worked amazingly for about 2 weeks, then that crapped out, but my doc assures me we can get that response back. I requested to try the Nardil. I know
its early on, but was trying to see if anyone had any experiences on these three meds. Thanks in advance..

Hi.

> Anyone tried this trio together?

Yes. I had been taking Lamictal 200mg + Nardil 90mg when I added Zyprexa 5.0mg. Several times I have tried Zyprexa. Each time I experienced a significant improvement that lasted for about a week or two before fading. The only side effect I experienced was a 20 pound weight gain.

Please post the results of your doctor's treatment strategy. I would love to know how he would go about bringing Zyprexa back to life.

How much weight have you gained on Zyprexa?

You might not get very much out of Nardil until you reach 75mg for a few weeks. Do you think your "worsening" might be due to sedation produced by Nardil? If so, this should pass.

It was a reasonable choice.

Only in the initiation period did I have some sedation starting Nardil. Now we've been buddies for 16 yrs.! I started taking Lamictal with the Nardil last year. Not familiar with Zyprexa tho.
Try to give a few more weeks to begin getting the full therapeutic effect of Nardil.

Hi Scott,

Thats so strange about Zyprexa how it works so well for a short period of time. The first time I tried it, it was just by itself and it made me hypomanic, which actually felt really good. The second time I had the Lamictal in the background so it tempered it a great deal, but still felt really great. Im not sure how my doctor is going to go about this. Ive already tried the Prozac+Zyprexa combo and it made me considerably worse. I think hes just taking shots in the dark to find something that will bring that Zyprexa response back, if such a thing even exists.

I do sleep way too much. Probably the Zyprexa and the Nardil. I dont notice any sedation when I take the Nardil though. Its always sleeping too late into the morning from taking the Zyprexa the night before. I am about to go up to 75mg, so Ill see how that goes. As far as weight gain, I havent noticed anything considerable from the Zyprexa. Ive been taking it for 6-8 weeks and have gained maybe 4 or 5 pounds. I will keep you posted if I find anything that works, and please do the same.
Whats your diagnosis an symptoms by the way? Thanks..

My diagnosis is what eventually might be labelled bipolar III. The only times I have ever become manic were only while taking MAOIs. Otherwise my depression is chronic and unremitting.

If you have had a transient response to Zyprexa, it might be worth trying a low dose of Risperdal (0.5 - 1.5mg) in its place. It tends to have more "staying power" when it works.

I gained 20lbs on Zyprexa. I might take another look at Seroquel, but I don't know what the therapeutic dosage range is when used as an augmentor to treat depression.

Mark,

I had a good reaction combining lamictal and nardil. Nardil took me 5 weeks originally to kick in, so be patient. I gained 15 lbs on lamictal, went off twice, the third time the combination wouldn't work anymore.

Good luck to you.

Shelli
