Larry Hoover - more questions about tumeric...

Posted by IsoM on December 19, 2002, at 5:11:27

Larry, NSAIDs are notorious for causing tinnitus. I have never checked into why or how NSAIDs do it. I'm curious if you know whether it's possible that curcumin may also have that effect. Because there are so many possible causes of tinnitus, one isn't always able to track down the reasons for having it. I've had it for many years, sometimes intermittant, sometimes constant, & varying in tone & loudness, but I've noticed it's louder now & constant again. Do you know of any possible relationship with curcumin? I actually don't think it's due to turmeric but I haven't changed anything else or been taking any NSAIDs.

One of the theories involves inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis, which is actually why you'd probably be taking turmeric in the first place. There is no clear understanding of why NSAIDs are asociated with tinnitus, but experimental animals get it too. I saw one study that showed gingko reversed the tinnitus induced by salicylates in rats. Still, the only method that always works is withdrawal of the offending drug. That's probably your best course of action; withdraw from turmeric and see if your tinnitus clears.

Well, Larry, even if it does increase my tinnitus, I don't think I'll stop taking it just to test that idea. Tinnitus is a minor nuisance (no matter how loud) compared to the pain I get in my joints. At this time of year, I use my poor shoulder joints more than I like & they need all the help they can get. Heat does so much good & I'm just about cooking my shoulders - one in particular. Mmm - roast shoulder... (said in a Homer Simpson voice)

But you've definitely made me curious about something in your answer. How were researchers able to deduce that animals had tinnitus from NSAIDs too? I'd like to know what sort of methods they used to figure that out.

I find cognitive studies done on animals to be very ingenous now. Remember when any predator that was active at dusk or the night was thought to be colour blind? Then methods were devised to test the animals. That & the fact that these animals had lots of rods, not just cones, in their retinas, finally made people realise that many of these animals can see colour, albeit not as good as primates.

(I kind of figured cats could see colours as I've observed for years the interest my cats took in anything I was eating that was reddish, like raw meat. And my cats who eat green beans aren't fooled by anything else that's long but another colour. But I can trick them into thinking a blade of grass held sideways or a green pencil might be a bean.)

If it's cotton, soaking the stained area in hot water & some bleach will remove it easily. If it's not cotton, try soaking it overnight in a strong solution of an enzymatic cleaner like Amaze. It's harmful to the environment to use much, but I save it for tough stains. The enzymes break down the protein matrix holding the yellow dye & then when you wash in the washing machine, the colour should be gone. It needs an overnight soak at least to work well. Don't use enzyme cleaners on silk or wool though. I'm the queen of sloppiness so have gotten good at removing all sorts of stains.

Hey, thanks for the link. I wasn't too concerned about the shirt, it's old, but it was just kinda funny that I missed my mouth and I was at work, so I looked like a bum. Not the first time I've looked like a bum.

I haven't checked out the link yet, but hope it includes environmentally friendly cleaners. The environment is a passion of mine and I've been re-examining the harmful cleaners that I've used.

Thanks again.
