Increased Body Temperature--SSRI s/e??

Posted by Mystia on October 11, 2002, at 19:40:09

Has anyone else out there experienced a MAJOR increase in body temp since starting SSRI's? In the past 2 yrs, since I have constantly been on different SSRI's, I have noticed I am always hot (and my normal temp is never lower than 99-ever!). I sweat A LOT (even right out of a COLD shower) and can't seem to ever get cool enough. I started noticing this around 2 yrs ago and thought it would go away when I stopped that particular med (I think it was Geodon, not sure though) but it has stuck with me still.
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this s/e.

Myst

Profoundly.
It was actually impractical I was always washing my clothes. I thought I had a fever a lot of the time. It was the most noticiable mid-cycle for me and it is a fairly common side-effect.
I used to put peppermint oil in my body lotion just for the cooling effect, it helped especially at night, sometimes though I'd alternate between being intolerably hot to shivering.
After 4 years It did stop, I have no idea why, after that length of time though.

Absolutely. I gained weight on Luvox and thought that was why summers were unbearably hot (even more than usual). I was getting micro short haircuts and staying indoors all the time.

When I went off Luvox, summers mysteriously became more tolerable although I hadn't lost any weight. THEN I find out that that is a common side effect. Thanks a lot docs. :)

Check to make sure you aren't hyperthyroid. Some tests are better than others so a screening check may not have been good enough.
Though you would probably have other symptoms if you were hyperthyroid. My first symptoms were insomnia and feeling hot and moodiness, it took another 6 months to get the racing pulse and tremor and it also took that long for me to actually register as low fever, too. Hyperthyroidism is an all the time hot though one can superimpose hot flashes, versus menopausal symptoms are hot flashes surrounded by mostly normal temperature. Hypothyroidism can have heat and cold intolerance as a symptom, but usually the overall temperature would run low not high. Cushing's can also have heat intolerance as a symptom -- I think in that the temperature runs normal.
