Effexor XR... Should I stay on

Posted by Robin.d.j on August 21, 2002, at 16:15:15

This is the first time that I have taken any medication for anxiety and depression...The reason for taking effexor xr was so I would calm down and start eating and sleeping. I know with sleepand a rested mind I wont dwell on a broken relationship as much, and eating will not give me the gut rot feeling to sit at home and wither away...After 6 days of taking effexor I am finally eating and getting about 4 hours sleep anight, still obsessing alot. My guestion is : will i go through a bad withdrawl if I were to stop taking it now or say in 14 more days ?? By then I hope I have gotten back on track with eating, sleeping , and setting up support to help me go through this heartbreak time. I would just like to say I take it in the morning now with food and that seems to help me start to get to sleep earlier with wake up times through the night.I weight 175lbs now, I am male and 46 years old, and lately a cry baby...
Thankyou
Robin

Hey..if it is making you feel better..why do you want to stop taking it so soon?..if you do feel its helping you should sta on for a while...and yes you would most likely go through withdrawl...but there are way's of keeping it to a min. and I would not think it would be so bad if you've only been on a short while but I really have no clue...I guess you should hash it out with your pdoc before coming to a decision..good luck and its nice to hear you are feeling better..

Robin,
Taking the Effexor for only 3 weeks doesn't give you much time to get your feet back under you, imho. I could be totally wrong, but with what you are dealing with (those life events plus internal reactions) I would recommend more time.

I guess my view is sort of like taking antibiotics...you keep taking them even after you initially feel better. I would say 3 weeks on Effexor may alleviate your symptoms ok, but it sounds like you have other work to do before you'll really feel 'whole' again. I'd give it a few months, and during that time you'll be able to handle the loss of a relationship, plus take steps to get your life back on track with eating, sleeping, exercise, etc.

The withdrawal from Effexor can be awful, it is true. That is why it is important to have a good pdoc and a plan for quitting. When you get to the point of getting off Effexor, you can post here again, and look in the archives and get lots of good suggestions for minimizing the impact.

In the meantime, it would be great if you could experience the good benefits, get to feeling better, and not worry about withdrawal. It is doable; many people here have done it and lived to post another day. You can too. If you are back on your feet when you stop taking it, that'll probably make a big difference too.

Good luck.
Shar

Withdrawal from effexor is pretty bad for most people once you stop taking it completely, slightly uncomfortable with decreases but once you take your last pill, one week later you should be fine again. Small price for help you may receive.

Sorry Robin......
