Just given Trazadone, afraid to try it....

Posted by Pattisun on May 30, 2002, at 21:59:14

I read all the side effects and some previous posts, I am wondering what your experiences were....I was given Elavil for sleep and pain at night and found it just turned me into a stumbling zombie. Now they just gave me Trazadone. (plus I take Paxil and Klonopin). Any good/bad effects with this stuff?

Thanks for the feedback,

Pattisun

I loved Trazadone at night, until it pooped out on me (it worked for about a year or so). It really improved the quality of my sleep, and consequently my fibromyalgia (which I believe to be the result of sleep disorders). I'm med sensitive so always take low doses but don't remember how much Trazadone I took. I didn't feel like a zombie, I felt refreshed.

Now I take the smallest (25mg) cap of Trimipramine which helps my sleep. Neurontin seems to help my fibromyalgia.

Hi:

I had similar effects with Elavil. I found Trazadone really to be no problem, and I am *very* sensitive to side effects. It has a very short half-life, which means it doesn't stay in your system that long. I'd honestly say give it a try, as I think it is one of the best meds out there for sleeping/insomnia.

Good luck..

Jay

That's priapism which is dangerous, you should most likely not take it again. There have been cases where it simply does not go away and surgery is needed. Scary, eh?

Cece,

I have Fibromyalgia too which developed after a bad accident and I found myself unable to sleep. I know the less sleep I have, the worse the pain gets.

Thanks for the response,

Patti

I have been taking 25 mg of Trazadone every night for almost two years to help me sleep. It works very well for me without side effects. I tried 50 mg at first, but that actually made me anxious. I tried 50 mg again recently, and it didn't make me anxious, but I was groggy in the morning.

Trazodone at 300 mg/day has no side effects for me-doesn`t help with sleep at all unfortunately. I really don`t know if it has any benefits-I started it during a time of severe situational anxiety, it got a little better but that was probably mainly from the situation resolving. Cecilia

I still have a prescription for Trazadone that I never filled. That whole priapism thing bothers me. Remeron is so much better IMO. Don't be afraid to start low on Remeron. 7.5mg is a nice place to start in my opinion. You won't feel so drowsy during the day. Only 7.5mg seems to help me get to sleep by the way. You may need more, but why not see if you can get by on less? There's never a reason to be a higher doses than you need to achieve effectiveness. If the Remeron doesn't help, Remeron plus an SSRI like Celexa would be a great choice.

I've tried Trazodone, and it worked well for sleep. I did have a bit of hangover, though. My PDoc switched me to Remeron 15mg, which was too much (I slept about 30 hours after I first took it). 7.5mg gave me good sleep with no hangover.

I know it feels silly to take a quarter of a pill, when one is used to popping them by handfulls. The thing with Remeron is, that it works for sleep in small doses, and that effect disappears in larger doses. (I am now taking 30 mg Remeron as AD, and I feel much less sleepy than I did when I started on 15mg.)

Hope this helps.
Good Luck

Careful with remeron doses

I started at 30 and was whalloped, but it was better that 15 mg that is for sure. IMHO, as I tapered off and whent down to 15 and then to 7.5 mg I was knocked out for sure, but it seemed to make me more depressed. I even went to 3.5 mg and it just made my head hurt. Listen to what your doc thinks you should start with and go from there. This is just my experience. I suffer from depression/anixety with sleep disturbances.
