Who is successful, with what med(s)?

Posted by jay on July 10, 2002, at 4:20:54

I thought this would be a thread that maybe emphasizes a bit more of the 'positives' rather than just general questions. I'd really like to keep this thread as 'permanent' as possible..so in the future, others may benefit from our experiences. (Of course..YMMV..etc.) Also, rather that your 'diagnosis'..please list the particular symptoms your med(s) help. I will start:

Trying:

300mg Effexor XR (depression)
Tegretol 200mg 2x a day (Anti-manic)
Benzodiazepine (Bromazepam) 2x a day (3mg each)

This has just started...so I will report back in soon. I have a VERY hard time with the mania/anxiety crossover. My doc thinks that there are strong links between the two, and that may be why the benzodiazepines can help mania, and why the 'downer' meds like Depakote and Tegretol can help. (I know..they aren't really 'downers'..but involve the slowing down of nerve transmission.)

Hope to see where this goes!
Peace,
Jay

Peace,
Jay

75mg Zoloft (depression, social phobia. Not sure if this is high enough, as the anxiety seems to be getting more problematic. BUT on the other hand, I've been on it for a year, and don't know what I'd be like without it. I'm functioning - as in getting up, going to work, more or less achieving things from day-to-day.)

30mg Ritalin (spread out as 15 + 10 + 5, or varied as I need it. It clears out the "white noise" of ADD, but I have to time it very carefully. The 4 hours between doses which I was initially recommended do not work b/c of the wearing off effect. I find it reaches its peak approximately 1 - 1.5 hrs after taking and tapers off from there.)

15mg Ambien (I was prescribed 10mg/night, but that's useless. I have been shunted around from one sleeping pill to another, but none really attack the bottomline problem, which is that my mind just won't shut up enough to let me sleep, no matter how physically exhausted I am. The amnesiac and hallucinatory effects of ambien don't make me happy, but for the moment, I'm tired of trying anything new.)

Jay,

Good idea for a thread.

Current meds:

Lamictal 150mg (helps very slightly with depression)
Depakote 750 (reduces anger, irritability, doubles serum level of Lamictal, makes me very sleeply)
Klonopin (helps me sleep better at night)
Ambien (hypnotic-good for 4 hours sleep, then wide awake)
Hope to restart Prozac next week.....the only AD that ever made life tolerable for me.

In the past year I have been treated by 4 different pdocs....2 say I have Unipolar Major Depression/Recurrent and 2 say Bipolar II/Atypical Depression. Not long ago I was convinced that it was neccessary to have an accurate DX to effectively treat the illness...no more....roll the dice and treat the symtoms. It is only my opinion....the treatment of psyciatric illness is still in the very primitive stages.

Parnate(MAOI)60mg spaced throughout day.
Lamictal 300mg at night.
Eskalith 900mg at night.
Ambien 20mg at night as needed.
Xnax 1.5-2.0 mg as needed.

The dosing of the Parnate is a pain. But I would not trade it for anything.
Good Luck, mixedstates999@msn.com

Prozac 40 mgs in the morning, tapering down now (at the moment I am at 33 mgs, which I do by taking 40 on one day and 30 on the two next days).
For OCD.

Remeron 30 mg, major depression
Clonazepam .50 bid, anxiety and panic attacks.

Been on the Remeron for 7 mos, the Clonazepam for 4 mos. Remeron is working great for the depression. The Clonazepam is just barely keeping the anxiety at bay, still have the occasional panic attack.

Dx. Major Depressive Disorder, GAD.
Meds- Prozac 80mg,
Remeron 30mg,(just went down to 15 mg
on my own due to agitation).
Topamax- have no idea maybe mood stabilizer, anxiety reducer, weight loss aid ( put on 20 lbs with Remeron)
Klonopin- as needed. It is the only thing that makes me feel semi normal.
Time on meds- since May 18

Before this, I was totally stabilized on Prozac 30mg for five years. After going on Prozac weekly, all hell broke loose.

diagonsis: Schizo affective disorder

22.5 mg Zyprexa- for psychotic epsides
10 mg Paxil- for mood swings
1125 mg Trileptol- for derealization

slowly tapering off the Trileptol now.

I was taking just 10 mg of Zyprexa for a year and felt good. I tried going of the Zyprexa completely which was a mistake.

Jay,
You answered a thread of mine about lithium and that it was "too activating" for you. Can you describe this feeling more, because I have been on 1200mg and it nearly drove me up the wall. I have this pressured feeling and something like an extremly uncomfortable abnormal energy. It is sort of like when you strain and let all the blood run to your face. Feels like I need to scream or like I'm about to blow my top. It is difficult to describe. I was put back on 600mg along with Lamictal 100mg for one day now. I was able to tolerate the 600mg before, but now with the Lamictal the bad feeling is back like it was at 1200mg. I have cut back to 300mg and I am getting better. Due to this I think it is the Lithium causing the entire problem and the Lamictal may make it stronger. Thus, it makes the Lithium feel like and increased dose. Who can be sure though? Does this sound like what you are talking about. Can you relate?

Tom

GAD
Buspar 2*15mg
Works for some compulsive thinking, behavor(such as biting fingernails). I thought it was working somewhat for irritability, but I'm not sure any more. On Buspar I *never* get the extremely painful anxiety attacks (the ones you don't think you will be able to live through).

Remeron 30mg. This was prescrived a few weeks ago instead of Wellbutrin. Only effect I've noticed so far is increased irritability, some clumsiness, generally tired, short of breath ... Irritability is about to get on the way at work, can't have that.

Neurontin. Its like Soma to me. Anyone read Brave New World?! If not you should. Soma.
There is actually a drug called Soma, its a muscle relaxant I think. I read on the internet that Huxley got the idea for Soma from some plant derivitive used by tribesman somewhere or something.

I think there are varying degrees of success. I had, at one point, had it _made_, feeling like Buddha, and my lineup was:
60mg Geodon (helped with the Buddha)
75mg Effexor XR
2400mg Neurontin (600 x 4)

Dx with Depression and Anxiety, then got worse and we're thinking it's a BPII.

Recently, I'm getting to where I need to be.. on the upswing, having good days and bad, but mostly feeling better!
Unfortunately, the lineup is more complex:
40mg Geodon
37.5mg Effexor XR
600mg Lithium
200mg Wellbutrin
as needed .5mg Klonopin (if I feel like shit)

Thanks!
-Charlie

Hello,

I'm happy to talk about my success story after years of meds trials. I have depression and probably borderline personality. I couldn't tolarate any AD meds due to side effects, until I tryed "milnacipran" (IXEL). It's a french AD, which is more efficient as any other for depression, in my case. (it's supposed to be a bit like effexor, but more sedative).
