Paxil and seizure-like brain surges

Posted by nosferatu on June 25, 2002, at 9:48:18

Anyone experience bursts of electricity in your head followed by confusion and embarassment while taking Paxil? Every now and then when I am speaking with someone, I will blurt out some incoherent noise that I am fully aware of and unable to prevent or control. My doctor seems to think it is the result of a partial seizure due to the fact that epilepsy runs in the family, and he put me on Lamictal. I was just wondering if anyone else was having the same experience.

Aaargh! Toss more drugs on the barbie! Just like a doctor.

Maybe you should get _off_ the Paxil and see if you improve. There are rare cases of SSRI antidepressants causing Tourette's-like symptoms.

Could you convince your doc that you can try something else? You shouldn't have to live with the effects of both drugs.

That sounds like the brain 'zaps' that people complain about when withdrawing from paxil (or maybe it's 'pooping out'). My shrink is part of a major lawsuit aginst the makers of Paxil, just for those very reasons. BTW, read the packaging- it will mention those side-effects, even if your doc didn't inform you of them- judy

You know, I've had the same experiences with other SSRI's as well, and the Lamictal seems to actually help somewhat. Do you know if Lamictal is effective at controlling social anxiety too, b/c if it is, I may stop taking the Paxil.

Y'know, lamictal can make people really tired -- AND, paradoxically, lower seizure threshold. Is it possible that you could get off of these drugs and use cognitive behavioral therapy to overcome the social anxiety?

I know anxiety is a killer, but it seems like putting you on two hard-core drugs is not good for you.

I agree with you. In fact, I wish there was a natural way to cope with depression and anxiety through either herbal medicine, vitamins and cognitive therapy. Do you know of any alternative medicines that might help? I am sick of taking Paxil, and I remember being more alert and aware of my surroundings before I started taking it. Paxil did relieve my depression and anxiety somewhat, but I don't enjoy being aloof all of the time. I just wish things could be normal again like they used to be.
