Why is Dexedrine more taboo than Adderall?

Posted by DiscoPuppy on June 15, 2002, at 12:55:56

There seems to be this stigma for phychiatrists to prescribe Dexedrine (over Adderall or Ritalin) from what I hear. Is this true - and why is it? Adderall has some of the same ingredients Dexedrine does. . . so I'm confused.

Although my Adderall is working, it does caused a marked anxiety (generalized). Through reading books and skimming through web pages of people with first hand experience, it appears as though Dexedrine (vs Adderall) has somewhat less of an anxiety issue.

Can someone confirm?

I'm particulary interested in the Spansules.

Dex was the drug of choice for abuse in the 50's and early 60's(may be off on the time). Still a stigma there.
Same reason some docs won't prescribe stims at all to adults. They have their head stuck in the mud and don't keep up with current methodologies.
In other words, they don't read Psycho-Babble.

Adderall was called 'Obetrol' back in late 1960s

Adderall has less of a stigma attached to it because back in the late 1960s when amphetamine abuse by the baby boomer generation/hippies reached its peak, Adderall had a differnet name, it was an amphetamine diet pill called Obetrol.

Dexedrine was abused during this period, but I believe the main amphetamine drugs of abuse at the time were Benzedrine & Methamphetamine (Methedrine, now known as Desoxyn).
Interestingly enough, Benzedrine which is amphetamine sulfate, is one of the four active ingredients in Adderall, & Benzedrine was discontinued I believe because it was abused so extensively.

So any bias/stigma towards prescribing Dexedrine isn't really based on any facts or logic, its just that Dexedrine happened to be around at the time when the hippies were saving the environment/world hunger by doing every illegal drug under the sun.

Obetrol was eventually discontinued due to slow sales but when they started medicating every other kid for ADD (a condition previously known by the much less appealing name "minimal brain dysfunction"), Shire pharmaceuticals bought the rights to Obetrol & renamed it ADDerall. Adderall it is exactly the same drug as Obetrol down to the formulation, color, size, & ingredients. Adderall, I guess since it was renamed & put through ADD trials, got patent protection & millions were spent on advertising it to doctors & potential patients & so Adderall quickly displaced Dexedrine (which being around since the 1950s or so didn't have patent protection & so SmithKline Beecham wasn't willing to spend any money advertising it & to this day still only puts out 5 mg IR pills. (Even though the generic & Dextrostat are also available in the much more convenient 10 mg IR dose. -why there is no 10 mg Dexedrine pill is a question that boggles my mind to this day- If they made a 10 mg Dexedrine pill I would definitely get those instead of the 10 mg Dextrostat pills I get now even though i'd have to pay a bit extra).
