Different affects at different dosages - remeron?

Posted by BLPBart on May 9, 2002, at 19:51:55

I am currently taking Wellbutrin SR 300 mg/day (depression) and 40 mg/day dexedrine SR (ADD). I had been combining the wellbutrin with prozac but I had SEs that I couldn't tolerate-muscle and joint pain, extreme fatigue, weight gain, you've all been there. Anyway, my doc still thinks I need to add some type of serotonin-type drug back into the mix since my moods are pretty unstable. I'm very reluctant, though after my prozac experience. I'm still trying to lose the weight I gained on it. He has mentioned Remeron but I understand it's supposed to be very sedating. He thinks that maybe since I reacted the way I did to an activating AD like prozac, that maybe I won't get sedated on Remeron. I don't know, that would just be experimenting. I've been trying to do some research on what type of drug I could take that I could tolerate. I was thinking zoloft, but then I read something that I thought was interesting. I believe it said that at low doses Remeron was sedating but that as you increase the dose the sedation SE often goes away. What I read even said that most people will gain weight initially, but that if they stick it out they'll become less sedated and lose the weight. They made the point in the article that most clinical studies don't last long enough to see this effect so it's never reported - only the sedation at the beginning. Does anyone have any first-hand experience with this?

Hi,
Yes, I have hopefully some useful information for you as I've been on a varied Remeron career. When I first started this past September at 17.5 mg I felt pretty zonked out most of the day for about 1.5 weeks. I got used to this dose at 2 weeks and increased it to 35 mg within 3 weeks with no further somnolence. I did fabulously on it at that amount for 2 months at which point it pooped out and I had to go on Lithium as an augmentor. I'm now at 45 mg and have no somnolence effects except for a hellatious time getting up in the morning. I've found that increasing the dosage definitely kicks in the NE response and the drug takes on an entirely different quality. It's by far the best AD I've been on out of literally all of them, but for me does not work without the Lithium. One other note, it does cause weight gain especially in the beginning dopey stage, so if you do decide to take it, commit to a no nonsense exercise regimen or you will definitely pork out. I've managed to lose most of the 20 lbs I put on in a few short months, but it's a daily effort.

Thanks, it sounds like something that could work for me and you made it sound a little better than I've heard before.

I'm going to be increasing my dosage of Remeron up to around 65 mg over the next few weeks and will be periodically posting the results. Kinda like the board's very own guinea pig since it doesn't seem like many of us here have gone past the 45mg point. Mainly it's to ward off slipping into an escalating depression that seems to be wanting a piece of me for some reason. If you want to follow the details, here's the link to the thread here on this board:

Thanks, I'll follow it (nm)
